Greetings All,

I have added another page -
http://brcook.com/id29.html
for the purpose of documenting evidence of the various speculated production totals of Superbirds.

I am looking for:

- Any documentation for the number of export Superbirds.
- Documentation of the number of Plymouth Dealers in 1969.
- The NASCAR rules stating the one car for every other dealership rule for the 1970 race season.
- Clarification as to whether the number of dealers was USA only, North America or ??
- Documentation of the 1935 number often cited as the Chrysler Historical total on record.

And any other quantities with documentation.
There have been many numbers put forth over the years.

Thanks,

Brennan R. Cook

c. Eligibility.

(1) It is mandatory that a street version engine be produced by the manufacturer as a regular production option for installation and sale to the public in a regular product offering. For 1970 the eligibility quantity for bodies will be 1000 minimum or a figure equal to one-half the number of franchised dealers, whichever is the higher. Engine production requirements will continue to be 500 engines installed in cars before approval to compete is granted.

(2) Production models and production engines introduced by January 15, 1970, will be classified eligible for competition in 1970. New models or engines introduced after January 15, 1970, will not be eligible for competition until April 15, 1970. Any equipment introduced after April 15 will not be eligible during 1970.

I still think that the VONs are the key to backing up an accurate count. I have mentionioned a few times that I would LOVE to see a list tying the VINs to the VONs. If anyone has a list like that I have not heard of it yet.

I am willing to do the research, but I need the data.

If no such list exists, I can make one. (I have already started). Anyone that wants to can email a clear image of their fender tag or broadcast sheet & I will add the info to the list I started.

If you have a bunch of fender tag photos from car shows / meets that would work too.

What about these listings by regions they accurate? The other source is the 1920 list inside the superbird fleet engineering manual. But that book has mistakes doubles .And known cars not listed.I might have a few from shows pictured fender tags etc info.Still have copies and originals of broadcast sheets

Greetings All,

Thanks for the prompt input.

I too believe that the VONs could be a very accurate clue to actual production.
I am not certain if my logic is sound here but here are all the cars received at Clairpointe on the last day Superbirds were shipped out.  They are arranged in order of VIN.  Any VONs for these cars would logically ?? be close to the highest.

"The last Superbird" or the last one listed on the NASCAR list 172609 has been for sale in the past.  Did anyone see the VON for it?

The Highest VIN on the list is number 1771 or 181274.  Has anyone seen this car?

Well, the VIN for the highest J98xxx VON I have heard of so far is not on that list.

The VONs were pre-determined on these cars & were assigned VINs as the orders were placed.

Actual build sequence does not appear to be based on either the VIN or the VON from what I have seen so far.

I touched on what I knew in the 999 thread, let me find those quotes.....

Also, since the document indicates that the 999 cars would start at J99499 & it looks like the highest one we have so far is J99538 - we (I?) can assume that at least 40 were made.

I know what assumptions do, but sometimes the only way to learn is to be proved wrong.   :scratchchin:

Taking my VON logic one step further........

It is generally accepted that 1935 Superbirds were produced, right?

The highest VON I have for the normal paint code 'Birds so far is J98890. If the first one was J97000 as the document suggests that would be 1891 'Birds with normal paint codes.

If we assume what I mentioned earlier with at least 40 in 999 paint, that would put us up to 1931 'Birds based on known VONs.

Pretty dang close.........  ;)
