Synthetic Oil ? Who uses it?

I just changed the oil in Ole Red and decided sinse it takes a second for the oil pressure to get up that the engine might benefit a little more with synthetic oil.
I used Mobil 1 10W-30 with a Wix filter. Havent driven it yet so I dont know if I will notice any difference in oil pressure, idle, etc.
SO what do you all think? Is it worth the price?
I did notice right after I changed the oil, my cold oil pressure was down a bit.

Blown70

I use it in my WS6 Trans Am.  Works great.  However, I only put about 1,500 miles per year on.

Just 6T9 CHGR

Its thinner than dino oil......if you didnt have any oil leaks before, you will now......

I wouldn't use any M1 0w, 5w, 10w in anything with a hydraulic flat tappet cam.    I would use the M1 15w50 if I had to pick one.

I've used M1's in a bunch of roller cam dodge turbo cars with good results... and I've used it in some roller cam SBC's with good results - I've had better results from using 10w40 castrol syntec than the 10w30 m1 in one of those.

Lighter new oils are not flat tappet friendly.   The 15w40 diesel oil is a better choice.

Wow, wished Id asked BEFORE I spent the $30. Well shes mainly up for the winter, so I will change the oill in the spring. Didnt know the synthetic was actually thinner.

I had great luck with Mobile 1 5-40. Engine was worn out, 149,000 BB, Used the Moble 1 and death rattels went away.

Why would u say that the mobie one isnt hydrolic cam friendly?

Just put 5w30 moble 1 in my 440.

They don't have the additives - zincs, phosphorous, etc. that regular hydraulic cams like.      Roller cam motors don't need them.    This isn't new news... it's been on moparts and other sites for years.       I'm finding out that Amsoil does have these additives but I'm not about to go there.

:iagree: The only Mobil 1 that is flat tappet friendly is the 15-50 which has Zinc and other anti scuff additives. The lighter weight Mobil 1 oils no longer have these additive packages allthough they used to. Apparently, they dropped the additives fairly recently so engines that used to run fine on the lighter weight stuff could conceivably develop problems in the future. There have been several cam failures reported as a result of lightweight mobil 1 being used. In some of these instances the motor had been running fine for years and wiped a lobe when the owner switched over to synthetic lightweight M1 lube.

I've been using Valvoline fully-synthetic 20w-50 oil in the Hemi since it has been back in action.  It's a solid lifter roller cam though.

After the initial break-in period on the 2-ton, I have switched it to a Valvoline synthetic blend 10w40.  It's a mechanical-tappet cam too.

What I was warned about when it came to leaks, was that if you were switching to synthetic oil from conventional, old seals (especially main seals) may start to leak.  If you have a relatively fresh motor, you shouldn't have any problems.  So far that has proven true for me, since I haven't had any major oil leaks from the engine (with the truck transmission, well that's another story).

I'll have to look at a bottle of the fully synthetic stuff to see if they mention anything about additives.  Interesting...

Mobil 1 saved my Shelby Lancer from engine destruction. My son drove the car for an entire evening after the head gasket blew and it puked all it's coolant. Being out with his girlfriend and generally clueless about cars he just kept driving it. It finally died at his girlfriend's house and my wife went out and picked him up. I was working midnight shift at this time so I was at work. The next morning, while I'm asleep, they go out there, start it up, and drive it home. All this with zero coolant in the system. It's about a 20-25 minute drive back at highway speeds with a turbo. When I get up for the day they tell me what's been going on and I assume they've mananged to destroy the engine. I put some coolant in it and started it up. There was a slight tap that had not previously been there but it ran fine. All the vacuum lines were brittle as hell from the heat but it ran. I put a head gasket in it and we drove it until some mice chewed the wiring harness and shorted out the computer(s). I traded it for a Daytona Turbo Z. I use M1 in my Neon commuter car but stopped using it in my 71. After I ran the M1 in the Charger for a while it started leaking and that got tiresome. I switched back to conventional and, after a year or two, the leaks abated.

I use to use Castrol Syntec 20W50 but last change a few years ago was to M1 15W50 with (said real quiet-like... :-\ ) GM EOS (lots of good zinc and other vitamins for the motor...

I've been using Mobil1 in the daily drivers that are worth a crap & have had good luck. My little 91 Exploder has around 235,000 miles on it's original engine...oh & it does leak a little. :icon_smile_big:

I didn't know however, that they stopped using those additives in the lighter oils...was that about the same time they changed the bottles? About a year ago?
I always use 15w50 in the summertime, but I change to 10w30 for the winter.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

VAlvoline is good but not available in canuckada
I use Syntec 5-50

You guys had me worried there for a second until I read the above. M1 5-50 has servred me really well (with hydraulic lifters) in the high stress environment I'm running it in. I guess I need to read up on Moparts more often. I had no idea about the additives being dropped from the lighter weights.

Ok so i may not know too terribly much about all things mopar related or engine related or whatever but last night i was reading some book by smokey yunick "engine god" anyways he said he ran synthetic in every one of his engines.

He said quote: "Synthetic oil has better lubricity, increased resistance to high and low temperature breakdown and much better load carrying capabilities than any mineral oil in existence."
