Spiderbait's version of "Black Betty" (cool video) originally by the Ram Jam (which is cool too)

originally by RamJam? Don't think so.

Learned something new again  :scratchchin:

And I'm not even sure Leadbelly was the original artist. Hard to say with these traditional old blues songs that were always being reworked and adapted by different singers.

My favorite, house of the rising son by the animals. Original artist- unknown

Also not sure who the original composer was, but Leadbelly also recorded that song back in the 20's-30's. Look it up on youtube if you're curious. The arrangement is totally different (I'd post a link, but I'm at work and they have youtube blocked).

God's gonna cut you down traditional as done by Johnny Cash, Led Zepp. The Beatles... and others :shruggy:

Johnny Cash did a lot of covers in his last records - all stripped down versions...just him and a guitar. Some are pretty,  poignant considering the stage in life he was in at the time, like The beatles' "In my life", the NIN song, and the one that gets me all 'emotional' - his cover of "the first time i saw ever saw your face".

Other covers are just odd...like the Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus".

but really, are we just posting any cover songs at this point? The title of the thread says "that are as good or better than the originals" Not too offend anybody's sensibilities, but covers that meet that criteria are few and far between, and some of the stuff being posted here is just laughable...

Hard to say since everyone's taste is different. (Or maybe they have none?)

I haven't checked out all the links posted, it would take too long, but there are just lot of cover songs in general. With so many people adding to the thread, you'll have a variety of bands.

I'm not really a heavy metal fan, but if a heavy metal band does a good job covering something I'll give them credit. Having said that, I don't like Guns & Roses version of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's DoWoWoWoWoWoooor" at all. I like The Cult, but I hate their version of "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf. As much as I like Stevie Ray Vaughan, I don't think his version of "Superstitious" by Stevie Wonder is that great. Maybe part of it is that I have heard the originals so many times I don't like deviations, but I really think it's just that they should have done it differently. Some singers had entire careers doing songs by someone else, like Joe Cocker. I like his versions of a lot of what he's covered, but I'm just tired of hearing him.

I'd be leaning towards the latter. Again, I'm not gonna single out anyone's selections because I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent examples being posted, but there are a few (actually, quite a few) that leave me going "REALLY?!?!?"

I mean, it's only a matter of time before someone posts a youtube link to Great White doing Stairway to Heaven and claiming that that's the definitive version...

Motley Crue's version of "smokin in the boy's room" (don't recall who did it originally)

Brownesville Station I believe it was...

Also liked Motely Crue's Cover of "Anarchy in the U.K." (Sex pistols)

Thanks Cooter! Megadeth also covered "Anarchy in the U.K" but I think they put "U.S.A" in their version?
Didn't know that about Black Betty Ponch I always thought they did it first I guess not.
W.A.S.P covered "paint it black" and "Mississippi Queen" ok, I "THINK" paint it black was a Stones song and I THINK Mississippi was originally done by "Mountain"?

i'll try and find some eagles covers for ya'  :2thumbs:

The Gypsy Kings' Hotel California = WIN.

The Gyspy Kings do Richie Valens just about as well as Richie Valens, too.

And speaking of both "Black Betty" and Richie Valens'/Gypsy Kings' "La Bamba," my understanding is that these were both folk songs.  Black Betty originated as a work song among black American farmers, although it's almost certain that Lead Belly was the first to record it.  La Bamba is similar, but it originated in the southeastern part of coastal Mexico, possibly as a wedding dance.

on a side note, the guy playing the harp on the right was one of my professors in college. Purely coincidental, but when I searched YouTube for "la bamba traditional", this vid came up. He's also in the "La Bamba" movie in the scene where Richie and his brother are at the brothel in Tijuana as one of the musicians that are playing the traditional version of the song (and that's how he gets the idea to record a rock version of it).
