OK so i was finally able to get my block back to the machine shop so that they could boil, install cam bearings and freeze plugs. I also took my stealth heads and comp steel retainer and lock cause it was advised that the stock ones on the stealth head weren't that great. The guys started tell me that they will have to adjust the spring height and shims to put on the retainers and keeps. Now i though you could just swap them out? he also said we need to adjust the spring height to according to my cam which is a comp cam Xe282. This being said is he correct on this? and if so can some one tell me what would be the best spring height for my set up (i and building (383)496 stroker.

I am no expert but this little tutorial on the comp cams website might be a good starting point.  I'll be interested in what the guru's have to say about this issue.

One lesson I've learned the hard, expensive way is to Measure Twice, Cut Once.

The right thing to do is measure and shim individually every single spring. This is the only way to know that the spring is delivering the required pressure to the valve train. A first-rate engine man will test each spring for pressures at both installed closed and open heights on a spring tester before assembly.

Not something I skimp on. The entire process of setting up springs takes me about 3 hours if I have the right tools.
That's entirely separate from any other tasks such as disassembly, cleaning, checking valve stem height, machining spring seats or guides that are too high, or assembling rocker arms etc.  :Twocents: :Twocents:

The "as delivered" spring height will be fine. Have them check the seat pressure and if it's 130lbs it will be fine. They might need to add a few shims but probably not.  ;)
