Wise ass comments, yes.

Sarcastic comments, yes.

Condescending comments, no.

To me, the worst offenders are those who tell others that it's wrong for them to share their opinions.   As if there is a finite amount of people who can express an opinion, and once that number is reached, it is forbidden for others to say the same.

If you're ever sick of hearing something, it simply means that the majority agrees on that issue.   You're entitled to think that's weird, you're entitled to express your opposition relentlessly.   But, fer-cryin'-out-loud, don't tell people to stop sharing their thoughts.   Discussion killers ruin the potential for the evolution of the discussion.   Any time "that topic" comes up, it gets killed right off, and turns into a debate of freedom of speech, and the topic is lost.   Eventually, someone else summons the courage to bring up "that topic" again, and it is again promptly killed.   Rinse, repeat.

I'm sarcastic and take jabs at people in real life so why would I pretend to be anything else? It sure would be quite a surprise to meet members in person to find out they are totally different. After reading a few thousand posts by a person it's pretty easy to figure out what you can get away with but, obviously, new members will have no idea what's going on. What I see as one of the biggest issues on internet forums is that people misinterpret the meaning of something based on reading it literally and not in the "voice" of the person who wrote it. (This can happen in other forms of written communication as well but the internet is special due to "scanning" instead of carefully reading the content.) This is one of reasons I keep reminding people that the forum is public and indexed by all of the search engines that I know of. You never know who's reading (or will read) your words. :D

Of course there's always a chance that someone will go too far but usually people are quick to point it out when that happens. As always, if you hang out in Off Topic and want to voice your opinion you should have thick skin because someone is bound to disagree with it (sometimes for no apparent reason).  :nana:

For the record, I rarely delete a thread and relatively few actually get locked. It's usually only when the discussion degrades into rediculous name calling and/or threats and there's no point in letting it run. I think I've locked more threads due to inappropriate content than I have because people can't get along. Chris probably has about the same record and I don't think Neil has ever locked anything. :P

"Deleted" probably needs to be better defined in relation to the internet (and this site in particular). Sometimes it may mean "hidden", sometimes it may mean "gone - but with the possibility of being resurrected", and sometimes it may mean "gone forever". The first one is probably the most common while the other two are a bit more rare. I doubt that you've had 2 permanently deleted but I'm not so sure I would call it a coincidence exactly. :D

I suspect that a couple people may have my name in mind regarding this topic.
Let me just say that I am sometimes sharp tongued and may take things a little further than expected but I never mean any harm nor hold grudges. My friends and I debate topics frequently and if you can't hold your own then you get owned and I have learned to be rather forceful at times though I don't mean anything by it if I go too far.
I always thought that a little debate is good now and then and it also helps me to understand other points of view although I don't intend to get hostile and may sometimes be taken as such, I'm really not and it's never my intention to force my opinion on anyone.
If someone thinks that maybe I've gone too far just send me message and remind me and I'm usually happy to reign in a bit or drop completely when things get too hot but I do think I have a right to my opinion and learn from others too.
So, for anyone who thinks of me as a wise ass, sarcastic or condescending, I apologize and ask for some slack. My mood has been a little rough lately too.

I'm happy to buy the beers or drink of choice and let people get to know the 'real' me.  I'm only half an ass compared to several in here anyway.

I'd have to agree with the majority of you guys and say that wise ass & sarcastic replies can be humourus and can quell a heated situation.   If each party is well aware if the comments intentions, then I see no foul.   I think we would all agree that condenscending comments are not necessary and we probably could do without.   These usually, as mentioned, appear when people are continuosly disagreeing with each other and really do nothing to help the situation.   Perhaps I should have made my poll slightly more focused.

Personally, I see many opportunities to jump in with some wise ass answers on a daily basis which I am sure would garner a few laughs.   However, I feel that these laughs at another's expense is, not right.   Maybe I am a better man than I consider myself?

I see a bunch of opportunities in this thread alone but I just can't bring myself....., oh what the hell, here goes nothing:

QuoteWell, I am a pretty sarcastic SOB in person as well. Ask my ex.

Imagine that!   :D

QuoteFor a certain 3 to 4 members, yes it is necessary to be sarcastic. They do nothing but make this board look like retard central.

And I suppose belittling them publicly helps make the site look more intelligent?   :D

QuoteDude, I'm only 31.

Thank you very much, ol' man.

I'll give you junker, although I prefer the term pack rat.

Oops, I think that was a wise @$$ remark.

Or was I being sarcastic?

Ummm, ya - is it time for your medication Johnny?   :D

QuoteI'm sarcastic and take jabs at people in real life so why would I pretend to be anything else?

I'm sure your co-workers are thrilled when you walk into the cafeteria.   When's the last time you went on a date?   :D

QuoteI think you've deleted 2 that I was involved in...coincidence or not?

It's not all about you Bill!   :D

QuoteI suspect that a couple people may have my name in mind regarding this topic.

Never even heard of ya!   You only have a measly 179 posts.   :D

Geeesh, that feels better.

You guys are a good bunch and I am certainly glad I found you all a year ago.   I have learned a lot here, not just about Dodge Charger's either.

Thanks, Shakey

One thought I've had regarding newbies;

I relate newbies to being the new kid who transferred from another school in the middle of the year...friend groups are already formed & newbies are the odd kid that needs to find out whether or not he fits in with one group versus another.

Being a kid who was transferred a few times as a kid, I know that feeling well. That's why I usually try to give newbies some slack for a while...unless of course, they jump right in & begin spouting off, then they get what they deserve. :icon_smile_big:
However, it doesnt' really happen too often here.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

I say that a wise ass comment everyonce in a while is a great thing. Ask anyone I work with and they will tell you I'm definately a wise ass or a smart ass whichever you prefer to use. However I realize that it is only good in moderation. To me it isn't a problem between two people who know each other, but to be a smart ass to a stranger is just plain rude.

HOW ABOUT THAT 2006 CHARGER. Okay I had to do it.

I agree somewhat. There are situations where a funny remark is appropriate, sometimes it can make the person feel worse about whatever it is that they asked or posted. A lot of posts I have read have some off the wall, unrelated and unnecessary addition that shouldn't be there and isn't helping anything. If the post begins out lighthearted, then joking comments fit the bill better. But if someone is being serious it can be rude or hurtful to post a smartass comment. Maybe they need help fixing something with their car, if you have been a senior member of the board and have seen the topic many times, keep the comments to yourself. All you would be doing anyway is igniting or adding fuel to a fire. I am sure all of you know what I mean. If you mean it to be a joke, state that! Some people don't think the same way or can take things the wrong way. A lot of bad vibes can be avoided if some people kept things to theirself sometimes, you know what I mean? I agree 100% with the first post!!

Interesting topic coming from a guy who, among several other sexually inappropriate and sardonic comments in my past threads, recently made a wise-ass, tasteless and inappropriate comment regarding a General Lee picture I wanted for my four-year-old daughter's birthday cake.

Bingo.

It's just a case of "I don't include myself with 'those' people" self-righteousness IMO.

Do you suffer from split personality syndrome or something? Personality one starts a thread bemoaning the use of wise-ass, sarcastic and condescending replies and then personality two chimes in with a wise-ass, sarcastic and condescending reply? Which side of your own argument are you on?

Sorry if I hurt your feelings Bull.   :pity:

At the same time, the thread topic simply asked a question.

Read a bit more and you'll see that I agreed with most that wise ass comments are alright and can be humourus and can quell a heated situation, or in the case of the birthday cake thread I usually only serve one up in an attempt to be funny (like most), and almost always try to make a point of not intenionally offending or insulting another .  You didn't think that was funny?  Did you think I was serious?  Once again Bull, sorry if I offended or insulted you.

Maybe I should have known better as I kinda knew you didn't have a sense of humour, especially after the PM you sent me calling me an asshole because I made a wise ass remark in your parts thread.  (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,8675.0.html)  Did anyone else get one of those PM's as well?  It's the sarcastic & condescending comments that are the ones that I was most bothered with when I started this thread (I have since changed my way of thinking as it seems to be open season) and by the sounds of it along with your comment to me and others in the thread mentioned above, so are you.  Lighten up a bit man!

BTW, I am full aware of my condescending and sarcastic comments in this post so save yourself the hassle of pointing them out.

As you also mentioned in your opening comments, "I am sorry, but I have a difficult time accepting people calling other people stupid or lazy when they hardly know one another." Suddenly now you assume you know me well enough to say I have no sense of humor. On the contrary. People who know me know I have an excellent sense of humor, albeit dry and subtle. You don't know me and have never made an effort to get to know me so you have no basis for that conclusion. There are also times when people are going through a lot more than you can see here so if someone freaks out you might consider that there are other real factors involved than this quasi-life on a website. As far as being hurt, don't flatter yourself. I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of this thread. I understand the use of sarcasm as well as anyone here but I think I have a better grasp of timing than some.
