68 440 block

im intrested in buying a 68 440 block from a friend of mine and im just wondering what the E (E-440) means thats stamped in the front of the block near where the water pump housing is.    thanx in advance.   brian

if i remember right its the type of car the engine was in but i could be wrong
1973 dodge charger se was 318 in process of swapping in 440

An "E 440" would be technically, a 1969 Block...However, the casting date may be a late '68 date code.."D" would be a '68 Block...

i know its a  long shot !!a very long shot ! but whats the vin on  machined pad  just above the oil pan rail on the passanger side of the block  Brian  :popcrn: :scratchchin:
