reveal molding clips

I am repainting right now and am going to put a new vinyl top on. The original riveted on trim clips are still in place, it seems to me like a good idea to take these off and put a new set on after the vinyl is installed to help cinch it down, or should I carefully trim around them? Cheers.   Rob
