I recently had my A833 rebuilt and soon after I got it back in I had problems with getting into 3rd & 4th. So I drain the oil in order to pull the cover plate and out comes these chunks of metal!!

Can anyone ID these so I can understand what happened?

Very frustrated!

Thanks

John_Kunkel

Looks like what's left of the synchronizer struts, there are three in each synchronizer assembly. They can pop out of place on final assembly of the mainshaft into the case.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I drove it around for a couple days before it broke, does that sound like something other than an assembly error?

John_Kunkel

If you had 3-4 shifting problems from the gitgo I'd say it was an assembly error. The struts (if that's what they are) are shown as 44 in the breakdown below.

Like I said, I drove it around fine for two days so I think it's very possible something went wrong other than assembly.

That's what's troubling.

Time for disassembly and forensic analysis in any case. (no pun intended)
I'd take it back to the shop that assembled it and ask for warranty.

Who rebuilt it, if you want to post it I understand, if not E mail me at mopardan@optonline.net I'm about to ship mine out for a rebuild and don't want to send it there. Mine it hard to get in gear and pops out of gear while slowing down.

I think the best thing to do is break it down and analyze what happened before jumping to conclusions.

Well, I have the answer as to what happened with my tranny.

Sometime before I purchased my ride as a project car, the tranny was rebuilt using rear bearing 308LOE which is .795" thick. The 308SG8 should have been used, it has a thickness of .825" (see part #20 in the exploded view above). This caused internal parts along the main shaft to shift .030" to the rear which eventually caused catastrophic failure. The first weakest link being the synchronizer struts.

Recognizing the weakness of the '69 and earlier struts, Chrysler really beefed them up in later years. On this rebuild, those larger struts and associated parts will be going in along with the correct bearing.

Since my tranny guy feels he should have caught it, he's paying for everything. He's also willing to help me get it back in.

Hope this information will be of benefit to you guys.

That is a great guy. Standing behind his work and being honest about what he didn't catch. Glad it worked out for you.

Yeah he is a good guy, by putting in the beefer struts he has to also buy both the matching 1/2 & 3/4 synchronizer assemblies found in the later A833's. That means his cost right there is at least an extra 150 bucks because the 1/2 assembly is still good. He could have rebuilt it to '69 spec's and no one would have faulted him.

Good info!

I knew there had been some changes made to the good ol' 833 thru the years, but I haven't heard of this. I wonder if my '71 case has the good stuff in it?  hmmmmmm...  :scratchchin:

John_Kunkel

'71 was the last change in the synchros, '71 and later are the best.

The important thing to take note of is that the Hemi 4spd's have special internal parts, and that those bearings are near identical to the 23 spline variety.

post his name, always good to know honest guys.

Dave's contact info is on his web site at jobrated.com.

His big thing is older Dodge truck transmissions and transfer cases, though he also does A833's.
