Newbie - question on a '72 Rallye

Hey guys,

I just got introduced to the board last week and I've been reading everything I could.  Great resources, and great looking cars.  I'm looking at getting into my first Charger, and have my eyes on a '72 Rallye.  I'm really somewhat lost as to what to offer for the car though, and was hoping you guys could point me towards a good starting point.  The car is probably a 70 pointer...runs great.  It's not number's matching on the engine, but it does have the correct engine in it (400), as to what it left the factory with.  The build date of the engine was 1 month after the build date of the car, so I'd say it's NOT the original engine.  Per the VIN and tags though, it did originally have the 400 in it.  It runs great and looks great, but could use some additional resoration if I wanted to sink more time and money into it (which I'm sure I will).

Any advice for a Charger novice on what a decent price for this '72 Rallye would be?  Thanks in advance for the help, guys.

Chad

Thanks!  Good to see a fellow Kansan in here, especially one so close to me.  I work at College and Metcalf in Overland Park.  Moved to the MO side 2 years ago when i moved downtown.

I would say from my own  :Twocents:, as far as 3rd gens go the rallye would be 2nd or third most desired, behind the 71 only R/t and SuperBee.  The rallye is hands down the car charger to have after 71.  Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks for your  :Twocents: .  I know you haven't seen the car, so it's hard to tell, but what would you say a fair price for this would be considering the details above.  It's definitely a good looking '72 Rallye.

Thanks!

My  :Twocents: with out any pictures 10-14k for a nice looking cruizer.  If it was a 340 or 440 rather than the 400, you could go up another 2-5k.  those are just ball park.  What does the owner want?  In this buyers market I would offer 2k less than asking if he was in the 10-14 range.  If it is as nice as you say and he is asking less than 10k, you might want to buy it before someone else does.  I don't know were you are located, but I bet you could find a member on here close that will look at and advise you.  I was once told, " if it is the car you want , you don't make an offer, you buy it" I do not consider myself a 3rd gen expert.  I have owned some and still drive one and I like the 72 rallye better than the 71 RT, but the 71 Bee is my favorite :Twocents:

I live in Gardner Ks (close to Olathe) I am a 72 Charger Fan and know alot about them. I have 2 of these also. I would not wory about "Numbers Matching".  WE need pic's to give you a ballpark on a "good deal".  IMO the 72 Rallye Charger is the last of the good cars.

41husk

I beg to differ  :slap: since the WannaBee is a 73 :yesnod: but despite ACUDANUT 's misguided view of 3rd gens, he would be a valuable asset in your quest to purchase the car.  I look foreward to some pictures.

here's some pics.  Thanks so much for the help.  I used to live in Olathe, so I'm very familiar with Gardner.

Wow ! it looks very nice + straight, clean a real rallye - 400 no hide away head lights.  from those pics, if you can buy that under 15k and don't need to starve the family to do it, you might want to buy.  I would still have ACUDANUT or some one who knows what to look for asses it in person.  Pictures can be deceptive.  What does the seller want for it?

It does look good but in todays economy I'm guessing 8k. A numbers matching 340 car would probably add 3 to 4k unless it was a really nice survivor then it might bring a couple grand more.

Any pics of the fender tag?

God must love stupid people; He made so many.

41husk

For 8k I will buy it !  that is a fair price for the 73 rallye cars.  I believe the 72s our still running 5k over the 73-74.  I love the doors  :Twocents:

wow...so I've got 8k - 15k.  that's quite a spread in opinion.   ;)  He wants $13,950 for it, and I have him talked down a bit from there.  I decoded everything that I could from  the fender tag (only have it in video form), and it is a true Rallye, not an S/E with a Rallye paint job.  From what I'm seeing online, a good restored Rallye could sell for 20-25k since they only made about 4000 of them in 1972.  I didn't think he was too far off at $13,950.  Now i'm 2nd guessing myself...

moparstuart

offer him 10k cash  and see what happens .

worst he can say is no   , In this economy cash really talks

but check out the body & chassis  for rust , rust repair , or have a professional check it out for you , midwest cars can have a ton of stuff hidden under the paint .

offered him 11,500 cash and he said he just turned down a 12k cash offer...final price would be right under 13k if I pulled the trigger.  I just haven't decided quite yet.

41husk

I would say from the pictures, the seller is in the ball park.  If it is a car you will lose sleep over if you don't get it, Get It for the asking price.  I would feel comfortable trying to get him under 13k again :Twocents: at 8k I feel is the ball park for a similar 73 rallye, add $1500 for Rallye doors, $1500 for rallye tail lights and $$$$ rallye Vin.  I would say the asking price is not unfair.  Again  :Twocents:

I might ask him if he would turn down 12k twice.  If you want to really play dirty, offer him 12k in front of his wife :D

here is a few more...including the engine and a pic with the carpet/seats removed.  That is really the only rust that I could see anywhere.

chargd72

Something doesn't look right... I think that's 73/74 front grill.

72's have the lines curving in, not out.

Also, the bumper gaurds seem to be too long for a 72.

I feel the seller is not out of line and you will not be hurt at just under 13k.  I would suggest you look at the cost of total restoration of a 72 rallye.  I bet you can find another project 72 rallye under 8k.  If you do much of the work yourself and gather parts your self, you would probably spend at least 8k in restoration.  9Heck try to get a car painted black for under 10k.)  now we have spent 16k for the car and only waited 1-4 years to complete and enjoy, or you could pay $12,500 drive and enjoy as you make improvements.  Looks like you save over 3k and recieve instant gratification.   :2thumbs:

Are you sure it's a 72? It has 73/74 bumper guards and grill. Since it has those bumper guards, the rear valance is probably a 73.

chadtrease

I'm not sure what the "in vs out" comment means, but the grille seems to be right on for a 72 rallye.  here is a pic of another 72 rallye.  I'm pretty sure the '72 rallye edition had the vertical and horizontal slats.

chadtrease

based on the VIN and fender tag, it's a 72 Rallye.  WH23P2G139494

41husk

both front and back bumper guards are 73 as is the grill. but the bumper is pulled in with no filler.  (not hard to do, I did it with the Wanna Bee) it could be a rebody.  I still feel the price is not out of the ball park with the doors tail lights and paint, but I would have some one check it out.  I would question the bumper guards and grill
