I think i've discussed this before on here. but I have a 68' 318 motor that while driving rattles pretty good. It is a very low mileage motor. I've got the distributor turned back pretty far(vacumn advance is almost pointing to the firewall) and the motor still seems to rattle under a load. Im confused on what it could be. I havent checked yet, but if its 180 degrees off couse this cause it? all help is appreciated.

Hey   ive got the same motor in my 68 coronet,   (318)         But my vaccum advanced points directly towards my manifold.  Just something to check.

the rattling is probably ping, from having the timing to far advanced,or possibly shitty gas.id check the timing first, then try a higher octane fuel good luck, its probably something simple

Your distributor is not off by 180 degrees or the engine would not run at all and just backfire while trying to start.

Like Andy said I would bet you have it too far advanced...if you start it after the engine is warm does it want to kick back on the starter? The other issue is what the compression ratio is and the gas you are running.

another thing,if the motor has never been apart, the carbon build up will jack the compression way up.a trick i learned a long time ago is to have the car running, and pour about half a cup of water in the carb, with the idle high enough to keep it from stalling-shuld bust up the carbon on top of the pistons loose.you can buy a top end cleanner, but thats the way the guys in our shop did it when these cars were new!

you may have to move all the plug wires 1 position counterclockwise & rotate the dist so the vacuum pot ids pointed forward to be able to abck the timin goff enough or you may need to use premium fuel

Right now im running regular unleaded(super here is just water gas), and the timing isnt advanced since i've gotten it turned back pretty far. When I got the motor, it never really has been ran since it was a test motor originally and looks brand new inside. Thats what confuses me.
