There are lots of comments about backspacing on rear wheels.  But I am wondering what a good backspace would be for 15x8 up front.  Would 4.25 be safe with the popular 245/60/15?

Thanks so much,
M

So... I scoured the site and it seems people have met with mixed results using the 15x8 245/60 combo up front.  I erred on the side of caution and ordered the wheels with the stock 4.5 backspace because I can return them if they don't fit.  But I'm a little nervous now that my choice really was an error.  I have drum brakes and suspect 4.25 or even 4.0 would have been wiser.  I definitely like the look of 15x8 better than 15x7 - and am hoping I don't have to go through the hassle of returning them.  (Nor was I expecting any ambiguity over clearance.)  Its a little distressing and I hate vacilating.  Anyway, it seems there is gobs of room everywhere with the 235/60/14's that are on there now.  Fingers are crossed.

Went through Specialty, btw.

not sure what year you have but i had 15x8 up front with 245/60 15s on 4" backspace and they fit great with no rubbing. a little close to the fender lip though. now i run 17x8 on 4.5" backspace with 245/50 and no rubbing .

Thanks - its a 68.  Tires and wheels are going on tomorrow so I should know soon whether they're going to work or not.  I'm hoping I'll luck out, and the extra backspacing will let me drop the front about an inch for a slightly straight-forward stance.

So how did it work out?

I'm looking to mess with 17" & 18" up front

Yeah, lets see some pics. I had just ordered some OE steelies 15x8 (4.5 b.s.), 15x10's (5.5) and saw this thread. I am wondering why such a small tire? I wanted that planted stance with the factory look, but was thinking a 275 front tire, not a 245.

Update:  5" backspace on the 15x10 rims was perfect.  But I should have trusted my instincts and went with a 4.25" backspace or even 4" backspace up front.  As they are, the wheels will work but there is only about 1/8" clearance between the rim and the control arm.  But I got two opinions and have been told I should be okay...  Otherwise I am really happy with the results.  I also lowered the front end about an inch.

Pics to follow.

(Yes - it rains even in August in Seattle.)
