The return line was only on 3/8" sending units.

The vent tube however runs along the fuel filler neck through the trunk  and past the floor pan  where it vents into the atmosphere!!!

Sounds like you have a 3/8" sending unit that also uses a return line for a fuel vapor seperator up by the fuel pump. If you don't have two lines from the rear of the car to the front you can plug the smaller nipple on the sending unit. The 3/8" sender and the 5/16" steel fuel line mis-match is common on all 69 440 B-Bodies so that's not a problem.

Which brings me to a question....Not to hijack the topic so please forgive me,  but that vent tube....would it be feasible to plumb that vent tube up to the engine compartment and into the air cleaner?  Or should it go to a canister first??

Why bother?  Seems like a lot of trouble for limited (if any) "return" IMHO.

I dunno  just to vent the vapors into the carb??
