no more zinc in epoxy primer ???

I had bought a gallon of RM epoxy primer a year or so ago when i started my car. Went to order some more and gave the part # and they say its obsolete. I called PPG and asked about their epoxy and same story no more zinc in the epoxy.

As a comparison we were welding and the old RM red epoxy with the zinc turned slightly pink. The new "epoxy" when it got heated up it virtually burnt off

My brothers shop has always found that the old epoxy bonded great. On a piece of metal that was blasted and primed this past winter has rust coming threw it (stored in a shed) this new "epoxy" seems very INFERIOR to the old stuff.

Is there any brand epoxy out there with zinc it it anymore ? or has everyone gone tree hugging  and got ride of zinc in primer like they did with engine oil/

They also got rid of the lead in it a few years ago, Thats why PPG's epoxy is called LF for lead free. Now I guess it will be LFZF.    LEON.

Looked threw their tech sheet, but didn't see what is actually in the epoxy primer.

All the good paint is almost gone and the primers are next....gotta go and hug some trees now.

Ya gotta love the water base paints. Guess I'll continue hugging trees and use this colored water they call primer.

came across this zinc rich krylon epoxy. Anybody used it before ?

my friend paints bouys at the local coast gaurd base and he says  all their stuf is the old good stuff with all the toxic deth in it as bouys  really suffer in the elements.   I used devoe primer on a supercub airframe once  it was a deth epoxy and stuck very well, I believe it still is as good as ever.     also  I use dp-50 lf and love it  no problems at all.

Not much you can do about it. Just have to learn to work with what is avalibul. I've been painting for almost 40 years. seams like everytime I get used to something someone changes it. Then its a new ball game and the learning curve starts all ove again.

A guy on a mustang forum used it and said after its totally dry it was hard to get off with paint stripper

Zinc Chromate primer is nothing new, I remember using it 25+ years ago on a scuffed soon to be painted Chrome bumper. LEON.

Agreed, but we have tried multiple local auto body suppliers and all have said the same thing no more zinc in auto body primer. Although it looks like its still in use in aircraft, marine, heavy machinery material.

Being approved for aircraft use one would assume it must be the "good stuff" ? This aircraft spruce also sells zinc oxide primer. It is referred to  as the more environmental friendly version of the zinc chromate.

Since PPG isn't adding the zinc to the primer anymore, maybe they would tell you exactly what the zinc compound was.  Maybe it tells on the label of some of the old stuff.  If so, then if you could find it, perhaps you could add it after the fact.
