IM BUYING A 383 WITH A LARGE UNKNOWN CAM IN IT AND WANT TO TRY TO MATCH A TORQUE CONVERTER TO IT. IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NUMBERS ON THE CAM ITSELF THAT WOULD TELL ME WHAT SIZE IT IS? I DONT WANT TO TEAR THE ENGINE DOWN, BUT I WOULD TAKE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OFF IF IT WOULD BE WORTHWHILE. THE GUY IM BUYING IT FROM DOESNT KNOW THE SIZE BUT SAID IT HAD A PRETTY LUMPY IDLE AND HAD ALOT OF TOP END POWER. I KNOW JUST INSTALLING A NEW CAM WOULD BE THE SMART THING TO DO, I JUST DONT WANT TO SPEND MONEY IF I DONT HAVE TO.
THANKS FOR ANY INPUT.

Number will be on the end of the cam, so that means taking of the waterpump, pulley's, balancer, timing cover and camshaft gear.
Camshaft gear off = retime the cam and you don't know to what specs.

I would use a indicator and degree wheel and measure max lift and 0.050 duration.
