Im trying to get a title for my charger, but what my local DMV is telling me is that my car is crushed but it isn't cause im looking right at it. Anyways I bought it from a junkyard and the guy i bought it from was suppose to send me the title never did and now im stuck in this mess. Any help or any ideas in what I should do next would help...

Depending on your states laws, it can be VERY hard to get a title for a car that has a "Salvage" title....They aren't supposed to be put back on the road once the salvage title is issued...Or that's the way it is here in Va...

However, I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that it hasn't, or can't be done....You will have your work cut out for you though...
First thing HERE (Va.) would be to have a DMV inspector come out and varify all the numbers on the car in question match, then the Inspector would have to come back out once the car is finished and deem it "Presentable (Safe) for the road"....Good luck and keep us posted on how it's going....Yes, there are other "Less scrupulous ways" to get a clean title for your car, but as stated, they aren't always legal...

Here's a link to the Idaho DMV page on Salvage Titles and how to get one, if that's what you think you may need. It looks like fill out a form:

http://itd.idaho.gov/dmv/vehicleservices/SalvageVehicles.htm

Maybe someone on the board has some experience with one of the many "title procurement" companies? Maybe you could try following up with the guy you bought the vehicle from to see if you could still get the title? Do you have a bill of sale at least?

Here's a section on titling "abandoned" vehicles:

http://itd.idaho.gov/dmv/vehicleservices/abandoned_vehicle_guide.htm

If the guy you bought the vehicle from had a title but lost it, maybe you could grease his palm a bit to go and request a duplicate title for you to sign over to you. Or you could ask him to sign some sort of power of attorney form allowing you to request the duplicate title on his behalf.

Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

I a bill of sale but the DMV told me that when they pull up the Vin it shows my charger as crushed

I have done this in Idaho (Mountian Home) with a 70 cuda!!! It was fairly easy!! I called the DMV and told them I needed to get the car inspected to verify the VIN!! They set an appointment up for me and they showed up to my house and looked at the car and two weeks later had the title in the mail!!! Pretty easy!!! This was back in 2001!!! Tell them you lost the title and you can't seem to be able to find it!

I know NOTHING of Idaho laws, but it sounds similar to Wisconsin law. When a recycler or scrapper "junks" a car... title "stamped", logged in and sent to the state DMV. It kills the VIN. I would guess your vin has been run through someones log book and the title sent into the state.  Hence showing up crushed. In Wis that pretty much be end of story, sorry to say.  If thats the issue going through a title company will come back to bite you in the azz. And yes I am a Wis licensed dealer so I do know just a little about this. I hope Idaho law is NOT what ours is here.....

So if I have the car and its not crushed can I get a title is the question

ChargersETC..ETC..

Check with your state

Wrecking yards make mistakes like sending in the title off to the dmv too soon when in fact the car was never crushed . The last owner of the car needs to sign a form stateing that the vehicle was not destroyed and submit it to the state.

Yes you can get a title if it was indeed a true paperwork mistake.

In Wis it would be a "dead" vin -NO TITLE................. EVER!
And... In Wis its not legal for a salvage dealer to sell a car to a "retail" customer.  Now I  have sold some "bodies" in the past , but they were for race cars. And gave bills of sales that expressly stated that they may NOT be titled!  :rotz: If I did otherwise I'd be in deep pookie with the state!

Again, I dont know Idaho law. But here you would be screwed! I'm sorry to say......

Im confused, is this the same "shell" that you used a colege loan to buy?

I see you posted that you bought a bare, stripped shell form a junkyard on a bill of sale previously. an if I have been reading right, you paid $2000 for it, Thats a lot for something without a title.

I would ask the state inspector to verify the VIN on the shell and that it is not crushed, and was an error by whoever sent in the VIN. Plead with them to reinstate the VIN as a salvage title and the inspector will be able to verify the VIN stampings, as long as they have not been switched, you should have nothing to worry about.

Heck, just cut the front clip off another 68. weld it to yours and say its restored, i saw pictures of a certain (very famous) car that appeared to have that done, and is now 100% restored.

Thats why I checked with DMV when I bought my charger to make sure the VIN was good and there was no records open on it before I bought any other parts.

Keep talking to different people at the DMV, call write letters and so on.

Many don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground.

Eventually you will find someone that will know how to correct the error in the system.

In CA you can title a car with a salvage certificate but many insurance companies won't insure the vehicle.

I guess of course after you have talked to 50 people at the DMV and they all tell you the same thing then you can probably believe you have a crushed car and can figure out where to go from there.

Dont confuse a "salvage title"  with a 'junked" title so to speak. This is NOT the same....

You can have the Vin inspection done in the state of Idaho. They will come out and inspect the vehicle. Now they may not issue a title if the vehicle has officially been scraped. I do not now the laws regarding that. Call the sheriffs office and ask them. I would simply tell the DMV that you have the car and would like to know what steps are needed to have the VIN inspected. After the inspection is completed and if everything with the car appears to be OK
(original VIN tag rivets), I would ask how to get a title for the vehicle. I would also question them on a reconstruction title of some sort. Old antique cars found in the desert and built back up surely would not have titles available. Just an example.  :Twocents: Grumpy

This is different than a vehicle that was junked at one point , and been logged as such.
I really hope the Idaho laws are different than here!
