Which coil is best with Mopar Performance Ignition system?

Hi folks, I've got an MP aftermarket ignition system kit for my small block charger. When I fit it, I want to renew the whole ignition system, so I'm after a new coil. Trouble is, I can't find one that is recommended for use with the kit I have. I'm concerned that if I put say an MSD blaster in there, that I will end up frying the coil if I don't have the correct ballast resistor.

It does't help that I don't really understand how the ballast resistor/coil work together. :eek2:

If it were you, what coil would you fit? and are there some coils you definitely wouldn't?

The old girl is kind of reliable, and I'm keen not to spend my summer replacing ignition parts....  ;)
Cheers,
Nick

Do you have any kind of ballast resistor in it now? I just swapped my original coil to MSD Blaster 2 coil to my '69, and I used original ballast resistor which is 1.0 ohm and MSD instructions says that it should be 0.8 ohm. But it works fine with original ballast resistor so I don´t mind that 0.2 ohm difference  :D But I have had this setup only few days, so I don´t have longer experience of it, who knows if some problems comes up  :shruggy:

I'm on the standard points ignition setup at the moment with the original balast resistor. I'm guessing that it is 0.25 ohm which I believe is standard.
I've got a new ballast resistor in the kit, which I presume is identical to the original to fit with a standard coil, but I want to uprate to something which will give a beefier spark if possible. As I say, I don't know quite understand how the ballast resistor and coil fit together,  for example, if I get the right ballast resistor, can I make any coil fit with the MP electronic ignition system?

The resistor and coil need to match each other. Too big resistor and weak spark, too small and coil fries, it may not happen quickly but it will fry. Resistor is FOR the coil so the coil you use will determine the resistor.  :2thumbs: (I even checked with Ron!)

OK, I will ask the stupid question here. Where do get the different resistors at, never really looked for them. Always just went to the auto parts store.

Usually those who sells coils, have right ballast resistors also to those  :icon_smile_wink:

So as long as I get the correct Ballast resistor for the coil I choose, I can use it with the MP kit? So an MSD blaster coil with he "correct resistor" should work fine without damaging my shiny new ignition system?
Great - thanks very much. :2thumbs:

I think so, but I´m not 100% sure. But I´m pretty sure that you get answer from coil seller that does that fit for sure to your ignition system  :2thumbs:

The Mopar electronic ignition system (orange box) is essentially the same as they used stock from the early 70's I believe.  So if you used the MP Performance restoration coil or a parts store replacement then the ballast that was used then should work.  I think that Mancini is the only place that has a ballast that looks exactly like the originals used back in 69.  Of course, it costs $35 while a parts store one costs $5.  Interestingly, MP sell a performance coil but I don't remember any info about the proper ballast to go with it being mentioned.  IF you decided to go with the MSD coil, then I would think that a tech person at MSD could tell you what resistance they want for the ballast.
