Hmmm. There's a lot of irony in that story but it's way too easy to go there.

Um... even Jesus has bad days?  Imagine if this happened on Good Friday?  Now that would be irony.

There is a funny comedy song by Heywood Banks about that statue called "Big Butter Jesus"

In southern Ohio, just north of Cincinnati
I beheld a vision, next to the expressway.
Was a 60 foot jesus, with his hands in the air
looks like he's carved out of butter,
just like at the state fair.

Big butter Jesus
Sweet cream Jesus
Oh country fresh Jesus
Unsalted Jesus
Oh Promise Jesus
Imperial Jesus
Can't believe it's not Jesus
Oleo Lord.

Well you see him from the chest up
like he's about to do a back flip,
like he scored a touchdown
or maybe melting or about to drown.
Well I've been to the state fair
seen a cow made out of corn cobs
Garth Brooks made of string cheese
and the virgin out of olives.

Big butter Jesus
Sweet cream Jesus
Oh country fresh Jesus
Unsalted Jesus
Oh Promise Jesus
Imperial Jesus
Can't believe it's not Jesus
Oleo Lord.

Shipped in pieces on a flatbed
staring backwards was his big head
Driver stuck in traffic backups
desperately avoiding eye contact
Well don't make no graven images.
That's one of the 10 commandments
I hope the grading curve is kindly
You get to heaven with a 90

Big butter Jesus
Sweet cream Jesus
Oh country fresh Jesus
Unsalted Jesus
Oh Promise Jesus
Imperial Jesus
Can't believe it's not Jesus
Oleo Lord.

Can't believe it's not Jesus,
Oh spread the word.

Did this sit along I-75 near Dayton? I just passed by there last Thursday. Too bad.

Nope, they are going to rebuild it.
Cost $250000 originally, and the rebuilding cost plus repairs to the annex are estimated at $700000

And before we start into a discussion about idology, This was only a symbol, such as the crucifix found in many other churches. It was not an idol to worship, more of a statue to represent the house of worship that built it.

Hopefully that comment will be able to appease all.

Troy

It was partially (when it wasn't too dry out) submerged in a pond/lake - basically visible from the mid-chest up. I think they may have performed baptisms in the water? Highly visible from I-75 about 5 miles north of my exit.

Holy crap!  $250,000 and now costs $700,000?!?!?!?!?! :o  That thing better be made out of titanium for that price.  The life sized bronze statue of a fully suited up fireman carrying a child only cost $80,000.

I live approximately 45 minutes south of the "Big Butter Jesus" and they should let that terminator rest in the pond it lays in. That is one of those ridiculous circus attraction gimmicks. IMHO  :shruggy:

This thing is not life sized - it's 62' tall (and only from the chest up) and weighs 16,000 pounds.

Which reminds me, my uncle was a fireman in NYC & has some great stories. Timing is everything, he retired in the summer of 2001 & not too long before 9-11.

The statue and the building were insured

One thing that stands out is Nationwide in-surance.
You know, they got that more than 30 years ago.
They still carry it today because no matter what changes, whether it's teenagers being added to their policies, or if a 62' foot tall Jesus statue happens to burn up in a horrific, toxic fireball, with an on-your-side review, they get the coverage they need, at the right price for them.

You and me both, Jesus.

Like feeding orphans or sheltering the huddled masses? I always hated that thing. I'm sure the Muslims with the enormous Mosque up by Toledo are laughing their asses off.
