Gas Tank Sealant?

Hi all,

I was just curious to see if there is a sealant that goes inside of a new gas tank to protect it from rust? I've seen a rust treatment that loosens up rust in old gas tanks that gets shaken to break it up, but is there anything that can be applied for new tanks to prevent rust?

Thank you for any replies,
Aaron

They make one for bikes. Kinda pricey.

Gas tanks are pretty cheap now. I just decided not to coat it with anything and I'll just replace it if I need to.  :Twocents:

I tried those bike sealing kits on an old mahogany boat gas tank as replacements were non existant. Did not work very well so I had a new alunimium one fabbed up to replace the old rusty galvanized one.

I think I may have found the sealant...it's called "Redcoat." Has anyone ever use this before? If so, any positive/negatives?

Also - maybe a dumb question here - but do you guys also use undercoating on your new gas tanks? We've simply used a primer (etching) followed by an oil-based paint for protection. Should we proceed to undercoating as the last step?

And lastly, I realize that they used, I believe, a rubberized padding to cushion the gas tank between the floor pans. But, have you guys simply used regular carpet padding, etc..?

Thanks again!

I suppose, something as this would be cheap 'nuf:

I thought new tanks didn't require any inside treatment unless you suspect rust or contamination.  There are tank sealing kits made for old tanks that have holes, etc.  As for the pad, I wouldn't put something that can hold water between two pieces of metal, sounds like a recipe for fast rust damage.  If nothing else get an old rubber car mat and cut it to fit.

I had posted that question awhile back, but yes, I didn't put anything in the new gas tank. I simply focused on the exterior by applying several coats of etch prime, an oil-based paint, and followed up w/ several coats of undercoating.  Oh, I also purchased the new grommets, sending unit, fuel lines, and seal (inside the trunk). As for the padding, I simply purchased one off of ebay and everything hooked up just fine.

Thanks to everyone who posted earlier in this thread!
