Dude, I went to the one in San Diego last year and one of the plans got hit by a pelican (or the plane hit it, depending on whether you're the pelican's relatives) during a maneuver. It punched a big hole in the wing and missed damaging a critical part by a few inches. Dont remember what exactly, but if itd hit, the plane would have gone down.

Either way, seeing that stuff in person and up close was pretty effing cool. I talked my in laws into taking their boat out there that weekend and we were anchored about as close to the action as the Coast Guard would allow. Too bad they moved the US race elsewhere this year

I would fly with that guy...cool under pressure. As a kid we used to watch the tri-planes and bi-planes dog fight in air shows. Loved it don't remember anything like that though.

Actually the guy was nearly hyper-ventilating after he recovered. He should be!

I would still fly with him! Had an incident like that on a commercial airlines. We were on a flight from Maui to Tampa and I really didn't like the fact that we had that much fuel on board. Strangely I, for the first time, listened to the missing you song...country song. it's paradise, they all miss you, In short it was a really bad take off and we had to land in Oahu. I asked if it would be the same captain....He announced himself, that he was going to take us for the rest of the trip...I was thrilled! He had stayed calm under pressure and landed us overloaded with fuel safely. I know that he was in the crew quarters saying SON OF A ......HOLY COW.....DANG....and I would still want to fly with this guy any day of the week.

Do those things have two-stroke motors? Why are they smoking so much?

bordin34

They let out some smoke juice to look cool.

Its this weekend in Liberty State Park, the NJ side of the statue of liberty. I wanted to go but tickets cost too much $45 for standing and $85 for grandstands.

They inject oil (vegetable I think) into the exhaust to create the smoke. It makes it easier to track the plane in the sky while watching the air show.
