Friggin mouse turds everywhere!!!!!!!!!   :RantExplode:    The car sat for some 20 years in a southern california garage and the mouse has a hotel running under the dash.  The little bastards crapped on every damned flat surface that was under the dash.  When i bought the car the smell didnt seem to be as noticeable, but maybe thats because i was in love with the car from first site and the dry southern california air doesnt bring out the smell like Minnesota's 80ยบ and 60% humidity.

It all started with the "whats that smell?"  Then i tried the blower motor and it didnt work.  So i pulled it out and thats when the snowball started rolling.  So after tearing out the heater box, i am 90% done with mouse crap abatement.  The carpet comes out next and then the whole car gets a good scrub down.

What do i use to clean this up?  Just scrub down the whole firewall and anywhere i can reach with a brush and a bottle of simple green?  The air box will get a complete rebuild thats for sure.

I don't kow if this will work in your case but I had to clean up a rental house of my moms that had a "cat" situation. I found this online and it seemed to work, although it took a few applications to do it. It was a mixture of bleach, water and vinegar. I can't remember the exact ratio though. As best as I recall the bleach is to kill the bacteria and the vinegar "neutralizes" the urine smell. Although we had to repaint and seal everything to actually completely get rid of the odor. You may have to do the same with the infested areas. Good Luck!

Use a solution of bleach & water to kill the bacteria and virses. The mouse feces & urine potentially carry a lot of nasty stuff. Try to avoid breathing in the dust.

Yep, you definately want to wear at least dust mask and gloves at all times.

I had the same problem.  Scent Block, for bow hunting. Worked on my seat foam, its been a couple of months and still no smell.   I also inserted a couple of Bounce sheets.

You can also try Spray Nine, it works well as a cleaner & disinfectant. Simple Green also makes a cleaner/disinfectant that's used in hospitals & such. I bought a gallon of it, I think right at the local Home Depot.

Damn Paul, thats some nazty stuff right there!   How hard was it to take out the box?   Might be my next project :scratchchin:
Much easier than i thought it was going to be.  Off the top of my head here it goes:
1. Disconnect hoses from water pump, use air compressor to blow air into one end and catch antifreeze out of the other one.  Then disconnect hoses from firewall.

2. Take cover plate off from under glove box.  Take off glove box door, glove box itself (does anyone keep gloves in a glove box anymore?)  :shruggy:

3. Disconnect vacuum hose coupling near back off radio.  Disconnect some wires from harness to box.  One behind ignition key, a couple under glove box area.

4. Disconnect ductwork from under ash tray to each side of kick panels.  Unscrew plactic housing right behind center console.  Remove center console. (look out for mouse nests inside console) :brickwall:

5. Disconnect what ever I forgot to mention.

6. Go on the engine side and remove 5 nuts that hold the thing on.  Pull vacuum hose from intake and pull it thru to the inside as its part of the vacuum hoses harness that stays with the air box.

7. Take the 2 screws off the bottom center of the air box that holds the apparatus that is connectecd to the on/off valve by a solid copper wire.  Leave that under the dash hooked up.

8. Wiggle the air box back and out of under the dash.  Oh and take the two small screws off the duct work frame that is bolted to the right hand side of the air box.

Ok so tonight i stopped in at my local Ace Hardware to pick up some stuff and i got a gallon of the Simple Green that was mentioned.  Then i got a gallon of bleach from the closet at home and mixed it with some water in a spray bottle and i went to town on my firewall with the bleach solution tonight.

Last picture, i need this spring for my driver seat.

(Maybe I misunderstood...your not supposed to drink the vodka to forget about the smell??)

Paul, Once you have everything cleaned up. Put a couple some bars of Irish Spring soap under the seat. Just leave the bars in the box . Open it a little. Mice hate it.  :2thumbs:

1BAD68

I had a 70 Charger that sat in a barn for over 20 years.
When I looked at the interior it didn't look bad at all (picture of interior when I bought it) but mice had tunneled the front seat foam, headliner, heater box, etc.
The back seat was pretty much untouched but reaked from rodent urine especially when it got warm.
I replaced the interior except for the rear seat so I sprayed Febreeze on the underside of the seat until it was fairly soaked and set it in the sun to bake.
I did that 2 or 3 times and it completely eliminated the smell even on the hottest days.

All in all, you got very lucky. In NY, I have brought home plenty of Mopars. Its amazing what mice piss can do. They go in frame rails, floor pans, just about anywhere. The piss is so acidic, it rots out the entire car. I really hate mice. Johnny  :METAL:  :Twocents:

I had the same with my car...... Not that there was alot left of my interior but what was left whas eaten by the mice family......
One problem I still have left is that they crawled up the large flexible duct on the right and used the space under the cowl as their "barn".
It's stacked full with foam, hay, nutshells and brobably alot of shit too...... I don't have the intention to remove the cowl panel to clean the area.....

BTW be happy that they did'nt eat the insulation of your wiring......causing electrical gremlins or even a fire.......

That's funny.

If anyone has mice, just lay traps with peanut butter on them on the garage floor and they will be gone.

Sure they pretty much cleaned house in the headliner and they had the firewall pad at their disposal also.  The headliner has since been replaced and the firewall pad is next.   :-\

i can assure you i have seen worse....i was driving around vancouver and caught a glimpse of a charger off a frontage road. i found where it was and got permission to look at it.
the guy who 'owned' it got 'barn finds' and turned them.... this one was one he did not even want to turn. the body was perfect, and the original paint would probably have buffed out.but...
there were rat turds that filled the car....filled it. not just the random poops. i brainstormed a hazmat suit, a trailer and trips to every place that had the quarter machine vacuums.
the poop went at least a foot high in the trunk. it was even with the rear seats folded down and level with the top of the butt cushion in the front seats. all in all at least 500 pounds i estimate. although i would not feel good about mouse poopies, feel better your barn find is not a real rat rod....or rat turd rod. after much heartache and common sense i let the car go and did not even offer the insult offer of 3-500 bucks i am sure i could have gotten it for.
best of luck..

The cheapest solution that actually works well to get odors out of things like carpets, seats, & similar items, is hydrogen peroxide. My wife & I had tried all the citrus cleaners, the special pet odor removers, & all the expensive crap that works no better than watered down water without solving the stink problem. She read that the hydrogen peroxide would work, & at something like 89 cents a bottle it was worth a try.

Once, one of our brain-dead cats snuck into the garage & I didn't know it. I closed it up & the dumbass was in there almost 3 full days. It used the back seat of my Satellite convertible as a litter box & the seat was soaked with urine. One full bottle dumped into the seat foam from underneath after I scooped & wiped the turds off, left it odor free. I thought for sure I was going to have to have the seat redone, but I didn't.

I worried about it discoloring the carpet in our house, but it didn't. Here's a link in case you don't believe me...

Speaking of that, the other day I am driving my '04 GMC work van and eating peanuts from a big can.
Turned a corner and dumped a couple big handfulls right on the drivers side floor. I figured I pick them up when I got home.
Completely forgot about it until I was driving yesterday and looked down to see that they were all gone.
I always park my van with all the windows up and locked tight but somehow they got in and out, the only thing I can think of is through the fresh air vents somehow.

Brock Lee

I had a 1968 that was nearly as bad. Taking it apart I found more in the heater ducts and a ton up in the headliner. They ate most of the insulation behind the headliner and would piss and shit up in there.
