Thermoquad flooding

I rebuilt the carb on my 73 right after I got it because the throttle plate was froze shut and the car had been sitting since 91.

The car will start and run but it is flooding out something fierce. I can start it and let it run, but when I shut it off, I can look down the primaries and gas is running out and down into the manifold, so much so that the throttle shaft is damp around the outside of the carb. I pulled it off again tonight to recheck my float levels, and they are actually set lower than what it calls for. I think the paper that came with the kit says float height is supposed to be 1-1/16" and I have them around 1-1/8 so the fuel level is lower, and it still runs fuel out and down the primaries.

Any suggestions where to look next?

IF GETS EMPTIED at next day, needing to crank untill get it full again then you got craked bowls at wells area OR simply cracked epoxy ( pray is the epoxy! because thats a simple fix )

( dunno how I know that  :eyes: )

I took it all back apart and filled the bowl with acetone which should have run through if the wells were leaking, and it didn't. So I ordered two new floats and another kit because I tore a gasket when I took it apart.  :brickwall:

I tried running it and shutting it off, and then shining a light down inside the carb and it looks like the gas is running over where the jets are which is above the wells, so I'm guessing (hoping) one of the floats must have a small leak.

jets O rings ? that would be my next guess. ;D.

I don't think floats, because they would leak everytime with engine running too. IN FACT WILL BE WITH ENGINE RUNNING...  stopped engine must mostly stop the flow, unless some reminiscense pressure

and if you ask me... I have REUSED every part of the carb many times on several carbs BUT the O rings what are the only part that has been seriously damaged allong the years. Fortunatelly I have found hidraulic use O rings ( square profile ) that matches the ones on the carb kits. I don't remmeber anymore need to buy any other kit LOL.

advantage of these O rings I have found is they don't dry and get smashed like the originals, and still keeps so flexible, able to open the carb many times as necesary without even replace them.

You know what, I bet you nailed it with those o-rings because I never took the jets out. I didn't even look at the breakdown to realise there were any o-rings under them. And my dumb ass being overconfident just sprayed some carb cleaner through and blew it out to be sure there was no blockage.       I'm going to check that tomorrow.

Primary O-rings ( bad or left out)or too high fuel pump pressure. TQ, and Edeys dont seem to like anything over 6 psi.

Nacho-RT74

just in case... THESE O RINGS ( number 49 on diagram ):

sorry I told jets O rings, and not, they are PRIMARIES O RINGS... used bad terminology...

That has to be the problem because I know for fact I didn't replace them. I can probably set my floats back to 1-1/16 now. Man talk about a stupid mistake.

I used to call those service instructions like that and all service manuals the "Bible". And I'd tell my son when he was going to work on something to be sure to read the Bible because it wouldn't steer you wrong... I guess I should take my own advice.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it turns out. It has to run better when I'm done, I just hope I haven't fuel fouled those new plugs.

I just put a new pump on and changed the oil because I had fuel getting in the old oil. I have a fuel pump pressure tester, maybe I should check the new pump.

these O rings are the "critical" part on TQs assembly, beside the craking around the wells or craked epoxy... rest is a piece of cake. And beside the float levers, everything is on exterior.

That was definitely it. I did replace one float because it had a dent in it plus I had order them both, but one of the o-rings were completely gone.

Anyway I replaced both of them, put it back together and it runs a whole lot better. I think I have a couple fuel fouled plugs so I'm going to just replace them all and hopefully put this to an end. I did find an oil leak that was evading me though. The oil pressure sending unit has a constant drip of oil coming out of it when it's running.
