The article said he was 18yo when "Diff'rent Strokes" ended.  Wow.  Too bad.  He always seemed like a decent guy who had a rough time of it as he got older.

I think if some TV show in Hollywood had ever given him a break in recent years, like maybe a recurring minor role, the public might really have welcomed him back.  He had been a famous butt of jokes long enough and he always seemed to take it pretty well.

I remember "The Simpsons" once did a show that ended with Gary Coleman & Bart & Lisa sitting around debating 20th century political science in a junkyard.  That was cool.

I think he life has always been rough. I remember in the late 70's when he still looked like he did in the earliest Diff'rent Strokes episodes, he was in a commercial where he brought awareness to kids that had kids that had kidney disease. I believe he had many kidney transplants in his life. His parents also blew a good portion of his money. Te show ended just as he became an adult. Without work, what money he did have left had to go to his healthcare to keep him alive. I am sure he blew tens of millions of dollars of his own personal money for treatments over the years.

Didnt he die of what Brett M just got done dealing with?

Pretty close, IIRC.

But Gary had a lot of other issues for a long time (both kidneys gone already for one).

There is some hypocrisy in everyone lamenting the death of Gary Coleman though.  I would still be right there joking about him with everyone else if he was still alive.

As Corey Feldman recently said, "Where were all these supporters for the last 10-15 years of Corey Haim's life?"

And now that "Blanche" died today the Golden Girls are on the endangered species list. Only one left.  :-\
