California YOM plates today!

OK...so I finally got my plates registered. It was fairly easy....

what you need:

1. a pair of plates. In my case I researched and found that they assigned the 60's plates by year according to the first letter...so, if you have a 69 car you want plates that start with a Y or Z. My plates i carefully media blasted then repainted with 1 shot sign enamel black and yellow..the yellow is basically the same yellow they paint the road stripes with. I actually took yellow and red paint outside and mixed it to match some fresh stripes. The hardest part was overlapping the radius on the letters just right so it looked original. I think that originally these plates where screen printed.

2. You need to find a real or very real looking white reflective 1969 year reg sticker. They will NOT accept no sticker, or say a 72 sticker or whatever. I found mine on ebay for 40 bucks. what is silly is it is only for them to look and and xerox, when you get your new stickers your suppossed to cover it up.The sticker has to be on the plate, in the correct position.

3. 45 dollars

4. Form CA DMV 352-downloadable from the web.

5. current plates, registration and proof of insurance.

At the DMV they will sort of not know what to do, so having the form already filled out was helpfull to them. Then what they do is lok at the vintage plates and do a search on their system to make sure they are no longer in there, or stolen. You can double check before hand by going to the vanity plate site on the web and doing a test run as if tho you wanted the plates to be vanity plates..if it shows up clear there, it will also show up clear in their sytem. They do 3 or 4 checks...car,commercial, motorcycle etc. in each case a little printout pops up,it all goes in the file.

The main snag my person hit was not knowing that the code was SP for 'special plates'. remember that SP...in case they get puzzled.

they take your current plates and give you a temp reg paper you place on your car while you're waiting for the new reg and stickers to arrive. They do NOT have to send the vintage plates to Sacramento, just a photo copy of them.

I also went to a DMV in a small town just north of here, as small town DMVs seem to be friendlier and less packed so they are more prone to dealing with an unusual request than say the assholes here at the big DMV in San Francisco.

The entire process went off seamlessly.

thanks, but I was just patient with them. thankfully 1 shot enamel sign paint has the perfect gloss and look, and it flows real nice ,leaves no brushmarks at all,I actually brushed it on. I use 1 shot for alot of stuff on the car where I cant shoot /spray paint on it.

They look outstanding. Makes the Charger look even better (as if that were possible).

CHP will certainly admire them the next time you interact with an officer. :D

Very nice, Frank! And thanks for the primer on getting the paper work together and through the DMV. Per ChgrSteve67's thread on this subject http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,58974.msg694705.html#msg694705 don't you get a metal tab for the current year sticker, and, in your case, leave the '69 sticker visible?

Yea, you did a great job on those. Why do they require a 69 sticker though? As if the tags would have expired the same year you bought the car. :coocoo:

they told me the new year goes in the normal space. I suppose if they send the weird tag I can mount it to the bottom right of the plate?

I put it down to simply weird bureacratic intertia. I guess having a 69 sticker 'proves' they are real plates or something? all I know is if you dont have it your out of luck.

I know alot of guys that have really old cars where there was no provision on the plate itself for a year sticker, and they run the extra little plate. so it might be a catch-all deal? Like I said, if they send one, I will run it unless instructed otherwise.

Frank,

do you know for fact that the DMV needs the properly assigned letter plate for your particular year? In my case, for my '68, I'm guessing that to look right I would need the letter W or X, and maybe even V. Does the DMV really care? Could I use any 60's plate as long as I have the proper year sticker?

The DMV does not care Dan.  Any 63 base plate will do for them. Its the year sticker they can't live without for some reason.

Now if you really want to be correct for your car then you would want to find a plate that has the letters that are within the years they were assigned.

The plates I have on my 67 Charger were off of a 65.
Very few people would know that unless I told them.

The story with the sticker is because you are doing year of manufacture plates the year sticker matches the year of your car.

Since my car was built and sold in 67 it would have never recieved a 67 sticker but I was still required to get one to register the plates.

SFRT
This is what the tags look like

They will not send you a set unless you ask for them.
You can chose to use them and put month and year sticker on them or put the M / Y sticker on your plates.
Its your choice.

Not amazed that almost a year after the program was put into affect the people at the DMV still aren't sure what to do.

Plates look great.
It will changes how people will look at your car.  Just something about having the old plates.

Hmm im a "Frank" as well, wonder how many of us are on here?  :shruggy:

Idiots, idiots, idiots.  They make no sense at all.  Funny thing is that California required you to turn in your old plates if they were invalid, so now you can use them when they were originally kept illegally?  I was required to turn in my black plates, which I didn't, and still have, for my '68 Charger R/T when I registered it after it sat for 10 years, and fell off the books.  Are you required to register every year, and put the current year sticker on along with the 1969 sticker?  In Washington, you only need one plate, you don't need any stickers, and you only pay $30 the first year to assign the plate to your car, and it's then registered for life.  They don't care about the year it was originally issued.  Just that the color matches the ones issued around the time the car may have been sold.  Even though the bureaucrats are completely retarded, at least they have allowed some way for us to get the proper plates on our cars at last.  Too bad I have no way of contacting the current owner of my former Charger to get the original black plates to them.

ChgrSteve67

In CA you must have both front and rear plates and it must be registered every year.

Jeez, nothing like waiting until the last minute.

I went a different route with my plates. Found a good used set at a swap meet a few years back and bought them with a guarantee that they weren't currently licensed to any car. Oregon has this special interest vehicle licensing deal now where you pay a one-time fee of (I think it was) $85 and you either get their new yellow back collector plates or you can do YOM plates with special interest tags.

Don't you guys in California have to re-up the plates every 2-4 years or so?
