I picked up a 99 F150 with 106000. Has a 4.6 Triton motor. Runs great, but I wanted to check the plugs. I cant seem to figure out where they are? I am feeling kind of retarded here! I have read up and found out it uses COP (coil on plug) ignition. I have two coil packs with the plug wires going in to the cylinder heads with real long plug boots. Anyone do a plug change on a Triton motor?

BTW, I am reading that it is common for a Triton motor to spit a plug out of the head at random. Anyone hear this before?

Plug replacement is easy, just take your time. When pulling plug wires/coil packs on these motors you should have a compressor and use a blow gun to clean out the spark plug "tunnel" before removing the spark plugs.Lots of dirt likes to collect in the holes. After that, when installing the new plugs just insure that the plugs are fully seated.Nice and snug, should be no problems then.
In the past I have seen/heard of the plug tread holes being stripped,I believe it is often improper install--removal and sometimes maintainance neglect.
Good luck.

they make a long spark plug socket to do those plugs. Its not needed but it does help when the extention wants to come out of the socket before the socket releases from the plug when installing the plugs. In 92 when I first had to work on these motors most plug sockets were to big of a diameter to fit down the hole. definitly blow out the holes and look around the holes for things that could fall in the hole before pulling out the wire. I have found factory plastic plugs left in the intake when the car was being built and its a pain to get out of the hole if they fall in. I blow off the entire intake before doing any plug then each hole as I go. I have been working on the 4.6 and 5.4 motors since 92 and have only seen 2 plugs come out.

drivers side is easy, pass side i used a 8" piece of 3/8" fuel line (edit rubber fuel line) to push onto the top of the spark plug.  i then used it to guide the plug into the hole and to get it threaded.  I came back with an extension, a universal socket, and a deep well and tightened the plugs.

I have had to repair 2 of the heads from plugs blowing out the threads...pain in the you-know-what while heads are still on the truck.....

I use a piece of rubber hose also when starting to put the new plugs in....
