The Combo:
451
Performer RPM
Street Avenger 770
Hughes (Stage I) Edelbrock Heads
Comp Pro-magnum Rockers
Hughes Hydralic Cam
LY Rods/Ross Pistons Block Squared NOT zero deck
TTI 1 7/8 Headers and 2.5 Exhaust
PTC 3000 Stall Converter
3.55 SG

Comments on Combo welcome, good, bad or what I should have done differently.

Here is the question, I had stock push rods initiallly and I was afraid of them not being up to the task so I bought 3/8" Comps.  The Stocks were ball/ball with no hole for rocker oiling ( I know mopar doesn't oil this way) the Comps are ball/ball but have the oiling hole, with this be a problem?  Appears to be no clearance issues with the 3/8 vs 5/16 Pushrods.

Lastly, This engine has been built forever (2002) and due to fighting America's wars I have only fired it once for 10 minutes (2004).  Anything special you would recommend before firing her the second time?   Thanks Guys.  Dave

Dave, I won't go into what I have seen from Hughes, that would be up to the owner of the 383 (cough junk) but that is a driffrent story.

I am guessing the rockers are adjustable? In that case deck height is taken out as far as the push rod lenght.  But intake port alinement comes to mind, well the few cells that are still firing.

I am sure that what I have seen from Hughes is a one, OK 2 time thing. Mitch from Fedural Mogel told me they do great work! Hum, he also told me to F--k off with my rare and one of a kind 15 over 440 forged piston today. But he was real nices about it. :icon_smile_big:

Sorry I was so - about Hughes engines and hope you have better luck than my friend with his 383. Ran F--king great for 7 miles.

the pushrods need to be long enough so only 1-2 threads show under the rockerarms
didi you break the cam in when you fired it up ? , it may not hurt to pull the intake & relube the cam , other than that I would just fire it up
the 770 carb will most likely be restrictive you combo should use an 850 + easily

:iagree: Sounds like a descent build. Which cam did you go with ?

CudaKen, I bought this stuff from Hughes a long time ago.  Sorry you had trouble with them!  I can neither give a thumbs up or down.

Chryco, I will see how it runs with the 77O, When I bought it I had 906 Heads.  What is a good carb for this kind of Setup?  Demon?

Firefighter, Here is the Cam I got from Hughes, Its one of their older Grinds

a Holley HP 950 would be friggin awesome on that , 750 dominator would be excellent too but it would need an adapter or different intake
& mighty Demon 850 annular would work great as well

firefighter3931

The old Hughes "3038" was a popular grind that still works well. It's basicly a split pattern Engle custom grind. Your combo is well matched in terms of cam and stall speed...good job

The "if it were mine" answer would be an upgrade to a double pumper carb. You have enough gear and stall speed to make it work really nice on the street. For a carb, the hollley 830dp with annular boosters is an excellent choice. You'll also want to upgrade the air cleaner because the unit pictured above is too restrictive. A K&N 14x3 with a 1.25in drop base will clear the stock hood fine and move plenty of air for this build. I also like the X-stream lids which also flow air through the top of the assembly.

Thanks for the info guys.  On the Carbs, are those CFM #s and not Model #'s correct?  Will the Mighty Demon work with the RPM Intake?  Firefighter did you mean 850 or was 830 correct?  Is the Model # 4150? Also, what are annular boosters?

The 830dp annular is a 4150 style carb. The annular boosters increase vacuum on the venturis for improved throttle response. These work well on street applications where there will be some low speed operation and idleing in traffic. The model # 9381 also has 4 corner idle for easier tuning. Here's a link to the 9381 :

Last Question, will the Holley 4150 mount directly to the Performer RPM or will it need an adapter?  Plumbing hardware?

Yep, the Performer RPM is designed for a 4150 style carb. A standard 4150 dual feed 3/8in line is all you need. I would also suggest a carb insulating gasket to keep fuel temps in check during hot weather driving & idleing in traffic.   ;)

OK.  i just thought I was through with the "dumb" questions.  Summit has the 9381 Carb new $402 buck and rebuilt for $230 are the rebuilt as "good as new"?  Lastly, on the insulating gasket do I need full plenum or spread bore design?  Thanks again

HD....there are no dumb questions, just ask away.   ;) As for the carb, my preferance is for new. Often used carbs have been modified and drilled out (metering blocks, throttle blades, air bleeds etc..) so   it's preferable to start out fresh, inmho. A box stock 830dp should be just about right for your combo....maybe a jet change but that's it. I'd bet it's allmost perfect "out of the box".

On the base gasket, you want an open plenum design for the 4150 carb and that manifold. Check at Summit for pn : hly-108-12
