Hello Nick,

Do you mean converting a column shifter to a floor shifter?
FLY NAVY/Marine Corps or take the bus!

factory floor shift, or aftermarket like B&M or equivalent?  In either case, yes.  An aftermarket unit will be cable operated and easy to locate and install, factory stuff a little harder with brackets and such.

what car is this?

I converted my bench seat car to a slapstick.  Not to hard.  Its good to get a set with the tunnel and weld it right in...I know someone who just cut one out of a 72 charger BTW

so is it hard to convert it over to a floor shifter?

lisiecki1

no, not at all, the aftermarket kits all come with instructions, so if you can read and turn a wrench you have all the necessary skills for the project.

You can swap in a column from a floor shift car or get parts to convert yours.  I just swapped mine out for a 70, auto to 4 speed conversion.  Not sure on which parts you need for a 73, but probably similar.

before i bought my 4 speed column, i drove the pin out of the shift handle and removed it and left the collar on the column.

Use it to steer the car?    :smilielol:

I was planning to keep the steering wheel...

I just finished changing from a column to a floor slapstick in my 73 SE.  I used all factory brackets and linkage from a 71 and the column also.  It was a pretty easy thing to do since when I got mine it still had a large piece of the tunnel with it.  By placing it over the existing tunnel I was able to easily line up the brackets and weld them into place.  My headaches all happened with the column.  Evidently a 71 and 73 aren't exactly the same in that department.  The steering shaft on the 71 didn't reach the gearbox connection on my 73 so I had to exchange alot of the column parts.  I have issues in the ignition now also (no spark when cranking but it sparks as soon as the key is returned to the "on" position)  Back to the point though.  changing from a column shifter to a floor shifter was a pretty easy swap for me.

If you are interested in the B&M mega shifter I got one brand new I had it for years been trying to get rid of it

I removed the column shifter, ground the lump off and filled in the holes.
Instant floorshift column.
