found the problem why the car was shutting off the coil was getting really hot, when I took the coil off this is what I found it had a pin hole thru the tower part of the coil and melted part of it??????? what would cause this. it is or was a new msd coil with less than 50 - 100 miles on it

Looks like it was arcing from the power lead to the tower. Excessive resistance in the coilwire can cause that to happen....electricty likes to take the path of least resistance. Get a resistance reading on your coilwire. It should not be more than 250 ohm per foot on all ignition leads....the lower the better.  :yesnod:

What's the resistance rating on the Firecore's, Ron? Do you recall off the top of your head?

I'd say the most likely cause would be the coil wire was not connected fully allowing it to arc. It can happen if the connector is bent or damaged. THe arcs eventually heat up the casing enough to burn thru.

That's a Mopar for you, just to damn much power.  :drive:.

Check the distributor cap for cracks.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The older 8mm factory replacement sets were 50 ohm/ft but the newer version is 250 ohm/ft. For a stock ignition system the 250ohm is fine.

The 8.5mm are 50 ohm/ft

excessive voltage probably from a bad plug wire, or coil wire. like firefighter said, path of least resistance.
