Hey gang.
I have a friend with a Superbird, 4bbl auto car... He has a Holley on it now and was under the impression it's original. The build sheet, if memory serves me, has "54".. I was under the impression that all Superbirds with a 4bbl carb had the Carter AVS version applicable to either auto or 4-speed. I thought that Holley's were available in '70 based on fresh-air applications, desire if requested specifically and on C-bodies.... Could be wrong...

The only time a Holley came on a Bird was when there were 3 little ones in a row... :icon_smile_cool:

It appears so - Looks like only Lo-Perf  1970 383's got Carters....but it looks like the Carters were back on some 1971 Hi-Perf 383's.

Troy, here are some pics of the 4738S - 1970 440 4bbl/AT/non AC - slated to be rebuilt for my 1970 Challenger R/T SE. This particular AVS model doesn't come up for sale often but they're out there. I have two; one as a backup jic. Although hard to see, the tag does indicate 4738S, 2409 for the date code, and the large font '54' to match what would be on my mia buildsheet.

I got a 70 383 N code coronet with AC looks a like similar appearing carb #4734S and has a solenoid in that bracket.I removed it and used the edlebrock carb electric choke.Saved the original but prefer the edelbrock  :Twocents:

Is your carb shown above for non AC. The carb picture you show except for the part number is a dead match for my AC carb on my 70 383 AC coronet. The empty bracket shown on yours holds the solenoid to bump up the idle speed with AC on my car.And longer bracket is where solenoid makes contact.

Actually Dave - The solenoid is on there (on 440's for sure) to set idle speed and shuts the throttle blades tighter when the engine is off to prevent run-on...It is used on A/C and non-A/C engines. No biggy - just want to clarify.

Same function as the solenoid on the six packs

Yeap,, prevent run-on after engine shut-down... Solenoid was used to reduce throttle when deactivated (when you turn your engine off)

So far as I know it is for non AC. I've compared the # (4738S) with 1970 440-4 non AC cars i've come across that still have their original carb, the reference chart on moparstyle, as well as the July 2007 Musclecar Enthusiast 440 Engine Detailing article of a 1970 440 non AC motor built by Frank Badalson and crew. So far, no discrepancies.
