It depends on a few things.

How low is your car?
Rim Offset/Backspacing?

Anything over 28 inches in diameter will be pushing it - even at stock ride height - never mind how silly it will look.

The sizes your talking about should work as long as you around 4" of backspacing and the car is not slammed.
Once you start lowering - you need to watch out for the inner fender braces.

Ok thanks and yes I lowered it  a bit, the top lip (underside-lower lip) is set @ 26 3/4" another words from the ground to the bottom lip of fender . back is stock height and the backspacing on these rims are are -0- according to the chart- ( Ion 625 alloy wheels 17x7 offset is -0-).
So I guess my dumb question is will these 255x17x45 work ??

0 offset on a 7" rim width is 4" backspacing.  That should fit however the wheel will be tucked in about 2-3 inches from the fender lip - if that's what your looking for.  IMO - the closer to the fender, the better the look - especially on a lowered car with a low series wide tire.  You may have some inner fenderwell rubbing on sharp turns.

255/45 - 17 is about 26" in diameter - so that won't be a problem.

Mounting those tires on a 7" rim will be a problem - you probably need at least an 8" wide rim to be safe.  Even a 245 at that low series probably needs a 7.5" rim.

I'm not really sure what you are saying here...?

0 offset on a 7" wide rim = 4" backspacing
4.5" backspacing on a 7" rim would be a +12 offset.

You mentioned a 255X45x17 tire in the first post.  Not all tires of that size will be the same size, even so  - that tire is too wide to mount on a 7" rim.  Even the 245/45 is too wide.

Check out tirerack.com.  They have good info on tire sizes and rim fitment:

I replied in your other post (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,69608.0.html), which asks the same question, so I'll post it here too. I thought I was losing my mind because I knew I had responded to you once:

A common/popular size tire for the front of a 68 Charger is the 245/60/15 BFGoodrich Radial T/A which has a diameter of 26.6 inches on a 15x7 rim. The diameter of a 255/45/17 is (technically speaking since manufacturers vary) 26.035 inches so in that sense it should be about the same. There are other factors to consider of course such as backspacing and rim width but this should be a good start.

Here's some info on Moparts posted by our very own dkn1997 who is running 17" rims: http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=5856998&an=0&page=0
