TRW steering pump?

Today I swapped emails with a guy from Steer & Gear who was telling me the 68 and older Mopars got the TRW steering pump. According to the Year One tech pages a 68 and older Mopar could have come with either a TRW or a Federal. Any way to know which car is supposed to have which pump or was it just another Ma Mopar mix and match party?

not trying to intrude on your question bull but it sparked my interest. may be a stupid question but what's the difference between the 2 pumps and how can you tell them apart i'm still learning as i go.

From what I've been told they look very similar, almost identical actually, but the shaft diameter on the TRW is 3/4" and on the Federal it's 5/8". There might be other differences but that's the only one I know of.

so it's pretty much just a redesign with the newer mopars getting a smaller diameter shaft? no difference in the performance of them?

I just rebuilt my federal pump on the weekend and it and the other 3 I have all have  a 11/16ths shaft, seal number cr6767.

Mine measures out very close to 11/16" but not quite. I'm assuming this guy calls them 5/8" because they're not quite 11/16" :shruggy: At any rate, they're definitely not 3/4".

I got more info today from Tom at Steer and Gear for those of you thinking about getting your steering pumps rebuilt. Especially those with 66-68 Chargers. You need to make sure what pump you have before trading it in as a core on something from a parts store. Something told me to make sure what I had before giving it away and it turns out I have a small TRW pump in my early 68 Charger. Had I assumed it was a Federal I might have gotten the wrong pump and lost the original and I wouldn't have found out until install when I discovered that the brackets and pulley wouldn't work.

I suggest if there's any question what steering pump you have that you don't assume. Send it in to someone knowledgable such as Steer and Gear or Firm Feel and have them identify it. Don't just get one off the shelf at "insert parts store name here."

From what I know now I guess there were two different TRW pumps used in 66-68, then they switched to Federal/Chrysler and then after that they went to Saginaw. I'm going to email Tom and see if he can't give me a rundown on which went in what cars.

federal pump has the pressure hose behind the front pulley while the saginaw has it behind the reservoir. not the same at all.

Right. I'm talking about TRW which are very similar to Federal.

Bull, did you ever get any further info from Tom at Steer & Gear on which cars got the TRW pumps?  I've got a late manufacture date on my 68 Charger and from what he described to me (of the hose), I think I might have a TRW.  :P

If it is, do you (or anyone else) happen to know the part number(s) of the TRW pump(s) that went into these Chargers?

I need to re-seal the pump.  If I do have a TRW, and since the TRW and federal look so much alike, can I use a re-seal kit designed for the federal to reseal a TRW pump?  Or do you know of a place I can get a TRW re-seal kit (I couldn't find any)?  :shruggy:  If it's just a re-seal, I'd like to do the work myself rather than send it away.

Appreciate whatever direction you or anyone else could give...

as it was told to me 68 and some early 69 big block cars have trw pumps and small block cars have federal . this is how you tell the difference between a trw pump and a federal pump

Thanks Bull...  I'll check that once I pull the pump to confirm.  :2thumbs:

Anyone know if I can use a federal seal kit on a TRW pump?

Apologies BBS... Got my replies mixed up.  Thought Bull responded instead of you.  :-[
