Just thought I'd see if any of you are contractors dealing with this "new" EPA regulation? (actually from 2008 I believe) Renovation,Repair, and Painting... turning any pre 1978 built home remodel into a lead-based paint nightmare. Being home owners, this can be a sticky subject. I wouldn't want a test anywhere near my house. Im all for the mitigation of lead and will follow the guidelines and be tested and follow the law....and pass the bill on to you. Being a contractor this opens up a huge liability... and it would have been nice to find out about it from someone other than a supplier or fellow contractor. Be ready...its coming...

As the homeowner, I discussed it with a contractor I've selected for some work.  One reason I picked him was, he was the only contractor to mention it beforehand.  It's not unworkable but depending on when your home was built, and what you're doing, it could add a lot of headaches, and more incentive to do it yourself.

There's already squabbles about interpretation so I don't see it a lot different than any other EPA OSHA rules.

You're required to go through some sort of training course but, around here, they're all booked for the forseeable future. It's unlikely that enough people will be "legal" by the time the law is in effect to actually do the work. If I remember correctly it a bit over $2,000 per employee.

The law went into effect April 22 2010. So it is LAW. Classes cost around $100, filling your firm (company) with the EPA costs $300. Both of which are required. From what I've read, I would never let anyone test my home. If theres known lead it needs to be removed from the entire house. If its suspected, you take the steps under the RRP (plasitc, cleaning, etc.) Fines for contractors are $32,500 per offense per day. Contractors reporting violations receive $3200. Were I to own a home pre-1978 I would be extremely worried.... your home just became a huge liability, all 125 million of them.

Oh, by the way, the owner of said home can feel free to do it themselves with no EPA regulations whatsoever...

Ah, it's been a little while since I heard anything then. I thought for sure it was more expensive than that though. Either way, for the homeowner it could be a nightmare.
