So I need to get a title for my 68 charger I got it from a junkyard with a bill of sale. I know I have to file a lost title application but it says it has to be inspected. Right now my charger is sitting on jack stands with no rearend, engine, tranny, hood, doors. So my question is which would be the best route to go get a title for it in the situation im in.

You may have a long road to travel, so be patient. The DMV rules & laws vary by state, but if the car has been salvaged, it may end up with a "salvage title" on it. Not the worst thing to happen, but some states will not allow a salvaged car to ever see the road. It'll also limit the number of potential buyers of the car in the future, as well as a lower price if you ever sell it. If there is no salvage title issue where you are, the DMV in your state will give you a better answer on what you need to do. It may not be a bad idea to "play dumb" at the DMV first & ask a bunch of questions about a car you are considering, but not purchased already.

I'm in NY & NYS requires "Proof of Ownership" which is basically the seller applying for a lost title through the state on a specific form. A junkyard car will likely never have been through the DMV system with the junkyard as the owner. If the car has gone the route of having not been titled over the course of many owners, then the procedure gets complicated with sending out certified mail to previous owners asking them to provide proof. Pencil tracings of the VIN tag, notarized affidavits, etc. Of course if any transaction was from one state to another, then buy some aspirin & plan on taking it regularly when you reexplain your tile dilemma to one person after another.

The other route, & much easier, could be to use a service that provides papers for lost titles & such, like Broadway Title. I used them once & it worked out fine, but some states will not accept papers from them at all.

i was in the same situation on a 66 plymouth i had, i filled out all the dmv paperwork and had to have it inspected a police officer to verify the vin on the title was the same as on the car (this is easy if you have a cop friend) they came out and inspected the car, had to pay a insurance company $100 for some paper work for a bonded title, took insurance bond, police verification and dmv paperwork back to dmv and a week or so later had a title in my name.

Okay here is the shitty part I went to talk to the DMV and they said since the place I bought it from charged me tax on the vehicle they should have gave me a title. That or the DMV said I could use their private investigator any ideas how long that process takes and how much it could cost me???

Do you have a buddy in one of the bill of sale only on old car states? You can "sell" it to them, they will register it, then they can sell it back. Your DMV will request that you have the police come and confirm the VIN on your car and run a stolen car trace. Bring that in and they will get you a title.

This system is how the Title companies work. You will notice they tend to have offices in bill of sale only states.
