I drove my car today and as soon as i headed down the road it was making a funny noise in a low gear. I checked my guage and it was very low. The oil was fine in the car. what could be the cause of this problem and how do i go about fixing it?

well...oil pump could be cashing in...or main bearings may be losing their "crush" causing blow by between the bearing itself and the cap or casting of the block....assuming your gauge is correct....check it with a good aftermarket gauge before coming to further conclusions

It could be something as simple as a collapsed oil filter or maybe the bypass in your oil pump is stuck open.

i have a new automete guage on it, at idle its showing between 10psi to 0psi.   what do i do about the oil pump?  do i get a new one if its stuck open how do i fix it.  i only put about 50 miles on the car and it didnt always have this problem until the other day.

If its a fram or other low quality filter replace it and the oil and recheck. Filter could have failed

Oil is not leaking out anywhere is it?  ....Bad sender, oil galley plug came out?

Did you run over something and damage the pan and pick-up?

Oil pump drive sheered and is just turning the pump intermitently?

Best to trouble shoot the oiling system with a drill turning the oilpump instead of running the engine more without oil pressure.

A few ideas.  :Twocents:

the oil and fram hp1 filter have only been on the car for those 50 miles. under the car is clean, no leaks of any oil, tranny fluid is another story and maybe soon to be another post.  i installed a new oil pressure guage and started the car, the oil pressure at idle was between 60-70psi but there was a knocking coming from the motor, i didnt get to pop the valve covers to see if it was a  rocker or not. im afraid to really run the car. im gonna try to get ahold of a primer to double check.  why is the fram filter bad and what do you recommend me using?

Fram filters are notorious for collapsing. Get a new one ASAP (especially before RD catches wind of this thread and screams at ya  )

Get rid of that Fram filter ASAP  :2guns:

Go to Napa and ask for the "Napa Gold" oil filter for your 440  :yesnod:

The whole Fram filter fiasco is old. Its been rehashed on a Motorcycle list I take part in for years.

The following has a few good tidbits about Filters...
http://www.vfrworld.com/tex_vfr/tech/oilfilter.htm
While a good bit of this info is specific to MCs the "Authors Notes" section has some universal tidbits. The "Motorcycle Motor Oil" link at the bottom is also a good read.

Not trying to start an "Oil Thread", just putting it out there.

hey the more info the better.   maybe i should be cheap, the oil was just changed like two weeks ago.  i'll do it this weekend and the filter too.   i havent had time but i think i need to look into the rockers too, it sounds like one was making noises. would one needing adjusting effect the oil pressure?

jeryst

Could have collapsed a lifter or bent a pushrod.

Never had a Fram go bad on me personally and I used alot of them years ago. A buddy with a 340 Duster had one come apart 20 years ago . Fram paid for the damage. Have read on car and motorcycle websites about poor construction and problems in the last few years.

I use Mobil one filters or Wix or Napa gold .  :Twocents:
