picked up a 23 spline b body 4 speed today along with a shifter and handle for my car, trying to figure out what this thing came out of..... i got some of the numbers off the case and tailshaft but having no luck decoding it.

on the tail shaft it reads-  2 (then a machined round circular block) C-96707J
passenger side main body- a large "3" followed by a weird shape resembling a goldfish cracker and under that
                                     C       97372

on the front next to the retainer is a metal tab screwed to the case- 5x22xE6
on the shift cover-  C   95664   7

The raised casting numbers are of little value when IDing a trans, look for a raised boss on the passenger side of the case with stamped info.

This page might help:

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

that article didnt help much with my decoding, lots of info though thanks! i am under the impression that only 69 and later tranny's had the raised pad on them. i cant find one on this unit so i assume it is 66-68,

Dans 68

My Hamtramck built '68 has a raised pad, with a partial vin (built Dec 21, 1967). Here is a photo of a St. Louis plant '68 A833 (that I picked up) with the vin stamped on the raised pad (albeit a June 25th build).

If there is no raised pad you have a '66-'67 B body 833.

ok cool, at least i am getting somewhere now.  i take it that is as far as we can narrow it down? cant get to a dodge or plymouth product line?

gently clean it up and look for a painted or stenciled number on the sice of the case. might help dtermine some about it.
