That would have been so cool to drive down to the dealer and "pick" a Charger out of a line up like that. People from that tome period were very lucky,even though you likely wouldnt even realize it at the time.

Tell me about it. When dad bought his demo '71 GTX 440 4 speed off the lot there was a '70 or '71 Cuda 440-6 pak convertible in the showroom and a '70 Superbird 440-6 pak that was the dealership parts runner. The same dealer almost sold my grandma a '70 Charger 440 R/T with 8,000 miles on it until dad took her for a test drive and scared the crap out of her. She ended up with a '68 383 Chrysler instead.  

Dad also talked about the time in '73 or '74 when he went to a sale at Russ Darrow in Milwaukee and they had a ton of traded in muscle with flags on the antennaes including a '70 Challenger R/T 440-6 pak. He didn't remember any being over $2K out the door.  

He bought the '68 Charger I still have for $300 a year or so later at least all was not lost.

Those days as you described just walk into a Chrysler dealer and get a bargain price on leftovers.Found this superbird ad circa 71 not a Chrysler dealer but a Ford dealer checkout the price year old car $995.00

A four speed Superbird for $100 more than a '68 Ford 4 door Custom 500. My how things have changed.
