Tranny Temp

Hi,

I was wondering what the perfect tranny temp should be?

Mine is 160 in town traffic, but returns to almost nothing at the highway.
(have a 67 440 with 727 and 3000 stall, extra deep oil pan and trans cooler in serie with the radiator one...)

Thanks

160 is safe 200 is the high end , if it is cool on the highway the converter must be locked & everything is working well

Sixtyeight

What do you mean by lock? And how do I do that?

the converter stall speed is below the RPM you are running on the highway so the converter is locked up

Sixtyeight

So its no problem that the temp of the tranny goes to almost 0 on te highway?

If the trans temperature actually goes near zero on the highway it's running too cool. You need a temperature high enough for correct viscosity and to cook off moisture.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Sixtyeight

Is there a thermostate or something available for this?

nothing I know of
what are you using for a cooler ?

Ghoste

Where is your temperature probe plumbed in at?

Sixtyeight

Hi,
here a pic of the cooler

And the location of the sending unit

Looks like the same sizes cooler I am running, it is a little over kill but so what we like to drive. ;) When you say it all most drops to zero, surely you don't mean freezing that is zero to us. What is the TEMP in Fahrenheit?

PS, love the video you posted. I save them on my hard drive
I am back

Sixtyeight

Yea,

don't really know where it ends, the meter stops (starts) at 140 F

Ah, well then, that is considerably more than 0.  It may be going less than 140 or just to 140 but in either case it is probably staying warm enough to keep things in check.  If it still concerns you, you may need to get a different probe and guage on there.  I wouldn't worry unless it is giving you trouble.  What engine temp do you have under those same condtiions?

180 on highway, 190 in town...

Well, if the car is running reasonably cool but not too much (and I don't think 180 is cold, it's about right)then I wouldn't think the trans is running cold.  Like I said, if it's worrying you, you'll have to set up something that can calculate lower temps.
