Electric fuel pump- OK to feed from top of gas tank?

My last question about electric fuel pumps, I swear.

So I am installing an electric fuel pump into my existing 5/16 fuel line.  Standard gas tank with fuel sending unit on top of tank.  I will be mounting the fuel pump below the gas tank, but the fuel line from the tank to the pump will still be above the fuel pump where it runs into the gas tank.  In other words, I won't get the benefit of gravity on the inlet side of the pump.

My understanding is that electric fuel pumps "push" and mechanical fuel pumps "pull".  So will I have a fuel starvation problem because the electric fuel pump won't be able to "pull" gas out of the top of tank (in other words, without gravity assistance)?

Thanks.

Once the line from the tank is primed it won't matter that much, as long as the pump is lower than the inlet it will act as a siphon... the question is, will your pump pull from the tank initially to prime the line? You can always test the pump on your work bench using a bucket and some tubing to simulate your conditions, or just ask the pump manufacturer.

Thanks for the responses.  How can you prime the line without using the tank?

I agree with Tom here....it will be fine. You're only pulling fuel through a very short length of line. Heck i remember a racer had a holley electric mounted in his engine bay and it was pulling fuel all the way up front....the car ran high 11's and never missed a beat.  :2thumbs:

That's where mine is (engine bay). No problems.
no need to prime. It won't burn out and it does not take long to pull fuel out of the tank. :Twocents:
