GY9 1972 Rallye Charger

My 1972 Rallye Charger was painted GY9 Dark Gold Metallic at the factory. I don't especially like the color, but I would like to know if there are any records on how many 1972 Chargers were painted GY9. I will probably go back with the original color when I re-paint it, but I will feel a lot better about the color if it is not just a common everyday color. Was this one of the high impact colors? Also, was the hood bulge painted flat black on every 1972 Rallye Charger?

Yes, as far as I know and seen, all the hood buldges are supposed to be black on the Rallyes anyway. As far as the color, I can't say I ever seen one in that color yet. any pics?

I don't know for sure about the hood blackout on '72 Rallye Chargers but, my dad's old '73 Rallye did not have the blackout treatment. It was an original paint, unrestored car that we bought from the original owner.

The GY9 was not a high impact color.

I am in the process of restoring a 1972 Rallye myself and have done some research. Supposedly the only two high impact colors for the 1972 Rallye were Hemi Orange and Top Banana. The hood blackout treatment (main hood blackout and perimeter stripe) were actually painted on in 1972. The few I have seen had the same finish as the rest of the car - a glossy finish - like they painted on all the colors and clearcoated the wholething. The one or two cars I have seen that have a dull or semigloss blackout hood treatment were tape kits applied later which is not proper.

As for the dark gold color, I can't help but believing that it was a very uncommon color the a '72 Rallye. Have never seen one painted that color. Most are orange or blue that I have seen. Galen Govier could probably tell you, but it will not be quick and will probably cost you a little.

i have a pic at the house of where the power bulge is supposed to be painted,it was in the tech articles of mopar muscle,5 or 8 months ago.ill look if i can find it,and post it latter,but you may be able to get it from them faster

They did not clearcoat back in 1972 so I assume those are cars that were repainted?

 You will not see that color on many chargers - if I remember right Plymouth called it Tahitian Gold.
I had a Duster 340 in that color -
Some chargers are meant to look classy not flashy - your car might be one of them !
I say re-paint it stock, anyone can slap Hemi orange on a Mopar....

Guess you are right about the clearcoat. What I meant is that the blackout treatment had the same gloss as the body paint (in the few cars I have seen).

Go to the general discussion forum and look at the 1972 ramcharger hood thread. Down close to the bottom, it has pictures of a 6-pack charger that is GY9. That picture was all I need to see. That car is stunning! Based on those pictures, I am definitely going back the original GY9 color.

694spdRT those 340 4 speeds are RARE. They guy i bought my car from had one and there is one sitting (at a resto shop) 10 miles from me. Very low production on those cars. Any more pics?

I know the 340 4 speeds are rare...that is why I wish we would have kept it. I think the production was a little over 300 cars. We bought the car from the original owner who had ordered it out new when he retired. The good thing is we keep in contact with the current owner and have seen that car at two Charger Registry meets.

The car still looks very nice for an original unrestored car. The new owner buffed it, installed some aftermarket wheels, and a 360 crate engine. I made sure he kept all of the original parts.

My R/T is factory GY9 with a light gold interior.The engine compartment is in the process of being painted and my front end has just been redone.I went back with GY9 becuase there aren't alot of people out there who like this color.But I have noticed that most GY9 examples out there are barn finds,original paint cars,etc and with these paricular cars they do  not represent the true color well.The color is very hard to photogragh.It has a chameleon quality to it becuase depending on what angle you look at it changes color.It had a very nice metallic in it.But when the paint fade,etc it turns into a baby poop brown and the metallic fades into nonexistence.Which are what most of the pics look like floating around on the net.
Hey even faded FC7 plum crazy purple paint looks like an ugly dead eggplant color to me!
If you see a GY9 car at a show with good paint they don't look half bad!

As far I know even decals/stripes were a factory option with A57 rallye package up there you could also ask for a delete stripes or decals option and is detailed on fender tag. Don't remember the code for delete stripes/decals

Here in Venezuela even all 73/74 Chargers had the rallye looks ( with flat hood exception on 73s ), didn't come with deck lid and hood decals... anyway, here didn't exist the fender tag or build sheet since all Chargers were assemblied with same options. only could choice colors
