like a snail on the edge of a razor

I asked for another car, and for my sins I got one.

Takes me out of the market for an entry priced driver third gen Charger or RR now now.

Many already do not think vintage performance car guys are all there.
That's why we flock to the internet and shows and dragstrips so we find like minds.

The Chevy and Ford guys point their fingers at us Pontiac, Buick, and Olds guys and say, "We are not crazy.  Look at how much harder they have to look for parts and stuff."

B-O-P guys point at the Dodge and Plymouth guys and say, "No, it's them that are crazy with how much they have to pay and stuff.  Those cars are expensive and the parts are harder to find than ours."

I just went all out and said to hell with it.
I bought an AMC.  All orginal condition.  Sure, its not the prettiest survivor, but it is all there and it drives and shifts and stops.  Only thing I could find on it not factory and not aging related was a discrete NOS bracket and ground in the trunk and a switch under the dash for it.

At least the interior is not green.

No good camera pics yet.

1971 Javelin SST 360 console shift

This was the first year AMX became top option on a Javelin.
SST was before.  I guess in market categories the Javelin AMX became like a TransAm, and SST was I guess equivalent to a Formula.
I am not exactly sure what the equivalent E Body is, a 383 car?

If you do not think I have totally gone off the deep end, consider this.  I am not sure which side the starter or oil filter is on an an AMC.  The same key for the trunk is not for the door locks but also does the ignition or something.  I don't even know what transmission is in AMC, just that it is a three speed console shift.

If Dad had allowed it, I'd have had a '69 390 AMX 4-speed all these years instead of the Charger. I snuck that in 'cuz I didn't have to borrow any money from him.

I like that style Javelin. But I think they look odd without AMX the rear spoiler. I actually know where  one of those sits behind a small barn near me. Looks just like your, but was painted purple at one time.

My grandma had one of those.  :icon_smile_big:

She decided against a 1970 Charger R/T with a 440 at the time. Dad went along to help her find a car and scared the heck out of her on the test drive. :brickwall:

I would totally buy a Javelin if i had the chance.   :2thumbs:  I think the B-O-P guys have a lot of the same parts issues we do.  A friend of mine search forever to find someone that had a good rear quarter for his 65 GTO that didnt cost a arm and a leg.

I think its the Chevy guys that can build a Camaro totally out of a parts bin, what fun is that.  How do they handle the VINs for those bodys that Year One sells anyway? :shruggy:

I wondered that too. Maybe a state issued vin or perhaps the company building the body has something it issues with each one.

Ok, my plans are a little crazy.

The car is complete, but rough.

The surface rust will get a light sanding, rattle can rust coverter, encapsulator, then AMC limelight green.  Should be about 75 bucks in spray cans there.

These is a patch needed in the lower passenger's rear quarter.  It will get the above treatment, until I get to a patch.  area to work on is about the size of a book, not to bad.

Brakes get freshened up next week.  Hopefully stay under 150 into those.

Must replace the tires, and a broken dipstick tube.  There goes 400 bucks.

It is finicky about going into reverse. Will drain tranny fluid, put in all new, put big chocks behind the wheels, shift into reverse, and let it idle a half hour or so.  Maybe that will clear up a sticky valve.  Maybe another 25.

Some vinyl tape for the torn up drivers seat and stuffing sticking out the top of the rear seat back.

Then I will drive it and save up for an engine and tranny rebuild.
I will be about 3300$ into the car by now.

It will get a 4bbl intake and carb.  Maybe bump the stock compression from 8.5:1 (that was new, probably moee like 4.25 to one now! to maybe 9.5:1 and bore 30 over.

Then dual exhaust, probably the side pipes.

then save up again for front and rear spoiler.

then it will be due for a paint job but already have twice into it what it is worth.  So I will end up making up stories to the wife about why its worth everything I am doing to it.

Then something else will catch my eye.

Acutally, I guess around here it may not sound so crazy.

Better pics...

Everything but this looks to be surface rust...

Yeah, this was suppsed to be ba third gen charger or RR, but for a running driver I am into this car for very little, and tis numbers mattching all roginal.

Daytona R/T SE

I always thought somebody should customize one of those by making the "Simulated T-Tops" functional.  :coolgleamA:

mauve66

maybe soak some rags in this and then use some etching primer after it strips off the rust
seems to be better than POR-15 for simple surface rust
