so i have a very VERY whimpy cam in one of my 440's  the motor has about 75 miles on it  :smilielol:.  this is the cam currently in it is 160125 256-Supercam 1500-4800 .425 lift int/exh
112 LSA
Best torque & economy in passenger cars & trucks. Max compr.,
9.5:1, smooth idle, std. axle ratio, good vacuum, computer com-
patible. Std. to 600 CFM Carb.
its an isky cam.
so heres the one i want to order
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ISK-160129/
the motor is 10.5:1 comp, have 4.10 gears out back and have a 3k stall convertor.  if i must ill buy a 3500 stall.  now for the main part in my post, the springs in the the heads (stock heads) are brand new so i dont want to have to buy new ones unless i have too, so will the new cam i want be ok with the springs i have? sorry i dont have any specs on the springs  ::).  also the lift on the cam is 505 int/exh so as ron says i should be ok to 510 lift  :icon_smile_big:  let me know what you all think!!

With the information that you gave us, the question cannot be answered with any certainty.  If the springs are stock-like (like the cam that is in it now), they will not be enough to control the valve train. :Twocents:

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

understandable, thats what i was expecting to hear sadly.  any suggestions for springs?

Best to call Summit Racing and get the matching springs for that camshaft.....I would also check piston to valve clearance as well...Just cause you have the valve springs to handle .505 Lift, doesn't mean it will work...

ahhh good call.  on a stock bottom end motor with stock heads what is normal for the size lift you can go up to without the valves kissin? dotn want to pull the heads if i dont have too.

What heads do you have? I have ran 513 lift with 516 heads. . I had no problems but maybe you should check your clearances to be sure. I am refering to lunati 60303 camshaft.

Ok those are open chamber. You should be good up to .513 of what i have tried. Always best to check. Good luck

There are better cam choices out there that will idle nicer, make more vacuum (easier to tune) and make the same power. That old school Isky has a real "dirty" idle.  :P

The valvesprings should allways be matched to the cam profile.  :yesnod:

I agree with ron. If your going to do them might as well do it right.

With your build and stall speed my choice would be the Comp XE274H grind with a set of Comp #911 valvesprings. Degree the cam in on a 106* intake centerline and that big dog will come to life.  :icon_smile_big:

how much power do you think that cam would make? with my setup, looking for biggest bang for the buck

It depends on how well the heads flow to a large extent as well as the intake manifold and carb. Assuming the heads don't flow any worse than stock it should make ~420hp/500tq with the headers and a good flowing exhaust system.  :Twocents:
