My brother came across a 1977 Champion motorhome. It has a 440 with a 727 behind it. I'm not sure what kind of rear end it has. It looks like it may be a Dana 60 but I'm not sure. See pictures.

Is a 440 from a motorhome any more heavy duty than any other 440 ?
Is a 727 from a motorhome any more heavy duty than any other 727 ?
What stall speed might the converter be?
Is that a Dana 60 ?
The engine starts right up, no knocking or ticking and no smoke!  The odometer reads only 25,000 miles.
We can pick the whole thing up for a reasonable price.
Whadda ya think ?

Thanks, Randy

The 440 will probably have different heads with more cooling passage area in them. Exhaust manifolds and the front waterpump housing, oil pan will be different the a car 440.  You can swap these parts out for a car unit. The 727 might be a little different. I thought the 727's behind Hemi's had something different. The truck 727's had this same thing. I cant remember what it is now. But its not that big of a deal.  The rear end might be a Dana 60 but could be a Dana 70. Not much good to a car guy and not worth much money.

Where are you located?  Are the wheels 8 lug and are they 16 or 16.5 tires? Does it have rear duals? I may be interested in the wheels if the price isnt real high.

MOPARHOUND!

I just bought a Dana 60HD from a 1976 motor home with dual wheels.   Had the idea of converting it to a car rear using parts from an 8-3/4.

But, going off memory, the 60HD had larger axle tubes, approximately 3.5" compared to a car Dana or 8-3/4 or 3/4 ton truck or van having 3" axle tubes.   DrDiff (Doctor Differential) on Moparts said most of the 60HDs he had seen with dual wheels had the bigger tubes.

So, I guess in the end the only useable part I bought was a set of used 3.73 gears, doh!   $40 dollars was all I had invested anyway.

Look on the lower portion of the reinforcement webbing on the pumpkin, the "60" or "60HD" or "70" could be cast on the front or rear, (not stamped).   My car Dana 60's are cast on the back, whereas the Dana 60HD had it cast on the front side.

IIRC, the tailshafts on the motor home 727 trannies are different, and would need swapped for a car tailshaft.

Check the water pump and see if the passages connect to the heads versus the front of the 440's block.

My grandfather had a 1976 2-1/2 ton Dodge truck, and it had the industrial set up with the water pump mounted high, with the passages connecting to the front of the heads.

Double check the pad by the distributor, and see if it reads 413 or 440 also.

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

What about 727s in motorhomes behind 360s ?  Or is that just a bigblock thing ?

I was under the impression the motor home trans had the 5:1 kickdown lever and a few more 'clutch' disks like the HEMI trans did. Also the torque converter is ultra low stall but you wouldn't use that one or plan on not using it is better. For a small block I don't think they are any different than a stock transmission except for the converter, but that is only a guess.
