Had another big one in China today. Seems like every other day there is one now.

This is just a list from the past 7 days  :o

For millions of years the plates have been shifting. I think the Mayans had it calculated right.. We will be witnessing one of the greatest Earth changing events of a lifetime. (Possibly).. The axis shift? The solar flares causing electromagnetic static (at large scale) possibly destroying the electronic grid we have become 100percent dependent on... But of course these are just therories.. No one really knows. I just hope its not like the Y2K hype.. And then nothing.  Did you know that the last time the earth shifted scientific evidence (through soil samples) showed that Alaska had once been a thick jungle? Hmmm who would have thought!

I am curious if the Mayans predicted there own demise or just ours?  :scratchchin:

Here in southern California we've seen more moderately sized earthquakes in the last three months than the total for the last year.  I think it's a good thing, as I'd rather have a lot of smaller earthquakes than a single big one.  Remember that earthquakes relieve pressures felt by faults, so each smaller earthquake helps to prevent a larger one.

My only worry regarding earthquakes has more to do with volcanic activity than earth shaking.  A lot of earthquakes can also mean higher likelyhoods of volcanic eruptions in the affected regions.  I'd be more worried about that than anything.

I wouldn't want to have to deal with an active volcano in California.

Hey, an active volcano would be good for tourism. Might be a way to cover that little budget shortfall.

Seriously though, I think I'd rather have a small tremor/quake every month than deal with "the big one".

well.. whenever there is a big earthquake in a part of the world, its P and S waves directly affect the stress points on faults that lie within proximity of the focus or epicenter.  the P (primary) and S (secondary) waves travel through the earth's crust and mantle

the P waves will travel through the mantel and through the core actually traveling across the earth and hitting all parts of the earth, but with a lower intensity based upon distance traveled.  S waves will stop at the core (they cannot travel through liquid) and bounce back to the earth's crust.

the waves, when hitting stressed fault lines, will be the proverbial "straw" that broke the camel's back thus causing further earthquakes in a nearer future rather than allowing them to naturally progress to the point of creating an earthquake without any assistance.  its a domino effect.

My neighbor is convinced earthquakes are a government plot. The government is going to set off Mt St Helens and Rainier...

First time I heard that one... and not sure why the govt would set them off in the first place.  So  much for plate tectonics

Haha. True that!

The end of the world would be terrible.. No doubt in my mind. Sure. Un-imaginable! Everything we know, and love.. Everything we ever have believed in.. Changed.. True change.

As much as I love "living" in our present time. A time where anything is possible.. Where nothing is enough.. Where satisfaction is temporary.. the only thing that allows you to live is only so determined by money .. Where people do not care for eachother. Where there is no respect, only judgement. no values, no honor. (I am speaking generally here) I know there is small groups, organizations, clubs, religions, that allow us to forget about and become distracted from the bitter truth. Money and power rules all. Everyone is judging eachother.. Race wars, sexuallality wars.. Crimes against humanity..no one appreciates Life.   But what about true living? What about the basic values? The basic needs in life that actually make us better people? Its only when there is more that people begin to crave more, want more, must have more...will do anything for more... Imagine a total "reset" of the world? Frightening? But who would survive? Only the strong willed? Only the adaptive?
Only the true appreciators of life and living.
Imagine the life that would exist, where the only thing that matters is the people we love! No more worrying about your mortgage.. No more worrying about your job, no more worrying about what new studies have found that have to make you stop and think about how you are over indulging and not respecting your body.  Living, admiring and truely loving the earth. Respecting its power. Respecting people that are only equal to you.
No worry of time, no worry of getting fat off mcdonalds.. No worry of money or the safety of "possessions" just eachother.
Appreciating the true small things we find insignificant.
Enjoying life with eachother, true companionship.

Its almost impossible to imagine.  But yes this lifestyle can be attained anywhere in our world.. But it is "socially" unacceptable. If I was to live in the forrest, jungle, island (that is governed by someone) somewhere, there would be someone who would take that away. I would have to pay someone. I would have to live by their rules/regulations, I would have to be "un-free".

A life we have truley never experienced.

But of course, this is only imagined.

If anyone could take anything away from this.. Just live. Appreciate the small insignificant things that you might take for granted.. Respect eachother. Don't worry about those things that are out of your control. Don't judge others. Don't crush others beliefs. Beliefs are only there to help a person live another day.

There is no proof any one religion is right.. So why judge anothers?
Respect people.

With all these things maybe the world will change one day.. Without the catastrophic event.

But until then, know there is those who do not and will never share these values.

Defend yourself, value your life, protect those you love.

.. And no, I have not been drinking.

First, I'm right with you Tilar..

I was listening to an interview with a seismologist on NPR (or national communist radio).
She said the  number of earthquakes (and the intensity) we've had lately is in not at all above average.   She said they have just been in highly populated areas and therefore publicized, as opposed to the middle of the ocean.

I tend to believe her  - since she is an expert.  Which puts me squarely in the "dog shaking fleas" corner.

we got the same thing here in Kansas, but its due to the ranchers burning the fields to allow for better pasture growth.  creates the same effects as what you are seeing Jon.  I got pics of it as I was driving.  Truly beautiful if you ask me.

ALL of your reasons for why earthquakes happen are completely wrong. I just read the following news story that explains it & now feel enlightened. I also feel that slapping some people upside the head is a good idea.

Earthquakes Caused by Loose Woman and Wild Sex
Published April 19, 2010 by:
Mark Whittington

The Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi related to a group of worshipers in Tehran, Iran what actually causes earthquakes. The cause is not, as one would have suspected having been deceived by infidel science, the movement of tectonic plates. No, the Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi revealed that earthquakes, at least in Iran, is caused by loose women who dress like tarts.

"Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi. He added, "Calamities are the result of people's deeds." And also, "We have no way but conform to Islam to ward off dangers."

One supposes that this is a variant on the old question, often asked after an hour or two of heavenly transport, "Did the Earth move?"

And there is the joke going around already, that in effect the Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi is an ignoramus since everyone knows that global warming causes earthquakes. Iran is ruled by one of the more puritanical governments in history, forcing every female above the onset of pubescence to cover their hair and their bodies. Most forms of sexual expression are forbidden, particularly the really fun ones, some on pain of death. It is no wonder that Iran's young people are very keen to get rid of the Iranian theocracy so they can do as young people like to do out in the open and without fear of official punishment.

To be fair, the Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi is not the only cleric to ascribe natural catastrophe to rampant sinning. Pat Robertson claimed that Hurricane Katrina was sent to flatten New Orleans, not for some of the stuff that goes on Bourbon Street, but because of abortion. The Haiti earthquake was caused by a "pact with the Devil" the people of Haiti signed in order to get rid of the French.

Of course the difference between Pat Robertson and the Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi is that the former has no real political power and the latter is part of the ruling elite. Pat Robertson did once run for president but was rejected by the American people. No natural calamity has been ascribed to that event. The fact that religious crazies run amok in Iran and are relegated to cable TV in America is, with due respect to our president and his advisers, a proof of American exceptionalism.

Besides, if loose women and wild sex caused earthquakes, I know of a number of places, remembered fondly, that should have been leveled to the ground long ago.
