One/Two/Three owner car?

Can someone explain to me why a small # of owners is a desirable trait for a car's pedigree?

I can completely understand matching numbers, paperwork, originality, NOS parts... all that makes sense but I can't figure out why fewer owners is special.  :shruggy:  It seems that folks even refrain from titling the car in their name so that they can say they didn't "own" it.  ::)

maybe because the lower number of owners equates to a better known history of the vehicle?  not sure.

DAM that was fast!    :icon_smile_big:

I even recall someone selling a vette on a televised Mecum/BJ auction where they touted the car came with a MFG bill of lading or something. Basically, no one ever owned it.

imho after 15 years it doesn't really matter how many owners there were. Certainly a one owner car that is also well looked after is desirable if it's still in good condition. any car that's been garaged all its life will be in better condition than one that sat in the street.

Bingo. Only two or three f*up opportunities instead of fifteen. And more likely to have kept receipts and remember what shop it had been in. Best example: how many know what cam they are running? I mean, really know the specs, not just the brand. More likely to know with fewest owners.

Then again we all have insane relatives or butcher "restorer" neighbors who are second owners and the cars still got hurt. Buyer beware.

Maybe not so much with our 40 year old cars, but a car that has been bought or sold every couple years tend to have problems... which is why the car has changed hands so many times.

Yea, but isn't all that just a big farce since some folks that "own" the cars but don't title it in there name and then call it a x-1 owner car? I mean, why else own the car but not title it in your name?

It's beginning to sound like the old "mint" or "rare" phrase, a big manipulation/subjective statement.

It is what it is!  I have seen cars advertised as survivors with fresh paint jobs on them.  Anyone can claim anything they want about there car.  Look at E-bay !  The hauler I just bought was sold as a two owner truck.  Givent to Cotton Owens by Chrysler.  Cotton sold it to Neal Castles and I bought it from Neal.  Trying to find out as much history as I could I contacted Cotton, who told me he had sold the car to Marty Robbins and purchased the truck back when Marty died, before selling it to Neal.  Neal said Marty may have had possesion of the truck since he drove some of Cottons race cars, but he doesn't ever remember him selling the truck to anyone else.  Who knows?  When vehicles are that old it is even tough to track the registrations.  I don't think the # of owners effect the price.  I am sure there are many low # of owner cars that are POS.  The quality of the car, market, options desirability and how rare the car is dictates price.  I remember the big 300 hurst C bodies.  Cool boats very rare and never realy took off in price.  Basicly a car is worth what some body will pay for it, regaurdless of how it is marketed ie. Low miles, one owner, numbers matching, Hemi, survivor, and well documented :Twocents:

Perhaps some might see a one owner car as being as close as they can get to being the original owner of it?
