weird noise apparently from tranny

Since I arrived from a car show at Maracaibo city one month and a half ago ( around 700 miles from here, 9 hours driving ) I haven't used the car because I have been afraid of it. Arrived with a weird noise.

last week tried to use the car but once warmed up, I was able to heard the noise again. It is something like a metal with metal noise like a bell... clink clank clink clank. It is VERY noticeable. It looks like comes from tranie but weird part of this is it is louder in Neutral. When engaging is reduced half of intensity.

Open up the hood and is not coming from there, just underneath the car.

Noise is like you take the converter dust cover and hits against something.

Already checked the cover and is not loose. Removed the cover and checked for some broken at flywheel... I couldn't find anything

some clue ?

It is posible the TC making some noise like that and still working nice ?

Honestly I can't locate exactly where it comes the noise, simply underneath the car and it looks tranny related.

Noise is considereable loud.

Don't really know where start... Is the tranny still working somehow, even in Neutral ?

at crank or TC ? honestly didn't check the tightness of the TC, but sure they din't look loosen.

I have run my car in the past with one bolt lost, one with threads went away and BROKEN flexplate... never got a noise!

Mine has done it 2 different times at the TC....scary noise, but EZ fix!

If one backs out a little it will hit the inspection plate and make a heck of a noise.  Look for scraping on the inside of the plate.  Bob

will have to check the inspection cover again... but no one bolt show a scraping mark either.

when I "lost" one of the bolts it was because the tranny shop damaged the TC threads and bolt was loosen step by step... I was hearing suddenly some noise but was some more solid "knock" untill a big Knock make jump the bolt from there. It was a hit againts the block. That broken the flexplate too, but I wasn't aware of that until completelly removed the TC... then flexplate piece come appart. But never got a noise like that

Loose torque converter bolts will generally stop making noise if you put it in gear, hold the foot on the brake and put it under a small load. Same with a cracked flex plate.

Had the same thing at the TC, terrible noise. I figured it was loose because my timing was off and had to rotate the distributor to start it. Good luck with it Nacho.

haven't had the chance to get underneath the car, but today a friend of mine also heard the noise and he though about the noise coming from inside the tranny too. Will check tomorrow

I think torque converter/flexplate bolts too.....I've seen cracked flexplates cause the same results....USE LOCTITE!!!

Nacho-RT74

confirmed... IS NOT flexplate broken or bolts loosen.

all 4 bolts were TIGHT... remove them and push the converter inside the tranny to get some clearence and try to find some play between flexplate and crank. Inserted a screwdriver bewteen flexplate and block trying to pry out a little bit and find some play there... none, flexplate was firm to crank as far I could find. Just checked one side of the flexplate because once converter loosen I couldn't crank it with starter motor, but it must be enough to find anykind of play there. Once got back at least one of the flexplate bolts, cranked the starter motor up to the other side, to try fo find some play between flexplate and crank pry it up... once again, none, so flexplate it looks definitelly tight with crank... bolted and tighted again all 4 bolts to TC.

I think it looks time to remove Tranny and make a rebuilt job. Unless you think on something that could be making that noise and fixable through oil pan.

I have a BIG LEAK anyway so would have to replace linkage seal and pan gasket

Darn! I've never had a problem at the crank, many LARGE blots and small diameter to hold. Sorry that was not it!  :scratchchin:

Sounds ALOT like the problem ive had for the past 3years

Only makes noise when tranny is warm, noise apparent in ALL gears, less noticeable in park though.

Ive just lived with it because i see no need to rebuild the tranny now when im going to be doing it when i finally get the motor built and start the resto completely. No adverse effects, just annoying.

Im thinking its one of the pumps making noise.

I had a transmission mount let go in my van which allowed the motor to move and let the exhaust pipe to bang against the body but it wouldn't do it in neutral, only in gear. :shruggy:

Broken hanger strap? (I fixed the old New Yorker with a wire coat hanger 5 years ago!  )

Nacho-RT74

I don't think some pipe related

a friend of mine is telling me probably TC broken inside.

Good, it's something simple. Don't feel bad though, I had a buzzing noise not to long ago. My first thought was the transmission that has less than 1500 miles on the rebuild  :eek2:.
But after about 30 seconds I figured out it was the speedometer cable.

Cheap and easy always the best fixes.

Funny with these cars we tend to over look the easy and jump to the expensive---it is easy to do!

the best on this, new mufflers that I got around two months ago are on the way ( SS Flowmonsters )... they are actually in Fl...

the bad, still will take around a month or so to get them. And I don't want to ride my car with that NOISE around
