Where does one go to find out how much a charger is worth?  I posted a while back on the old forum and then we decided to keep it, now my hubby is thinking about selling it again, but with cars this old how do you come up with a fair price?  Its a 68, green, 383.  It runs but needs some hefty body work (which is why we haven't done anything, we can't find someone who can do it in our area).

You definitely came to right place.  Please post some pictures so we can give you a better idea.  If the car runs/drives, has a NON original 383, is console shift and has the typical Charger rust (needs quarters, trunk floor, base of the window and maybe a floor panel or two) you should be able to get 6k or more depending on grille, fender and hood condition.  Ebay commands higher prices, so you might get 8k for a car that we feel is worth 5k.  Get us some pics and we'll try to shoot you straight.

These were taken last summer... but nothing but the position in the garage has changed.  Hubby takes it around the block now and then (no tags right now) just to move it and feel powerful... then he puts it back and dreams about a restore some more. LOL

Looks rough... runs good :)

I appreciate any advice you can give.

Without seeing the quarters and stuff it's hard to say.  Is it numbers matching?  I'm gonna stick to my 5k-6k estimate for now.  PLEASE don't sell it to HLPAG though.  :)

I keep seeing this HLPAG referred to... what is it so I know when I find it to run.

*note - I admitted to not knowing much.. CHarger DUMMY*  LOL

I'll see if I can get some better pics in the morning...too dark out now.

HLPAG is a car dealership (Luedke Automotive) that sells General Lees.  They buy up all the cheaper Chargers, slap some bondo and orange paint and sell them for 15k-20k to unsuspecting out of staters.  They buy the car sight unseen and when it shows up, it's junk.

That's a shame.

I imagine with the new Dukes movie coming out there will be a higher demand for the classic charger.  I had a yard sale on saturday and at least three guys (who were drug out by their spouses/girlfriends) questioned me about the car.  It was good though, even with my limited knowledge, I knew more than they did.  But every single one of them made reference back to the General.

When we go to sell it, I'll see if Hubby will strike a deal with you for them!

The demand for '68 and '69 Chargers is definitely at a high and prices are at a premium.   If that car was a GTO or Mustang, it'd be worth 1/2 that IMO, but the Chargers are just sky high.   Like I said, you might put it on Ebay and get 8k...it's a weird market.

Prices have jumped even in the last 6 months. It makes me wonder when the bubble will burst. Will it burst?

Dodge-Charger

Hey Wakko I'll agree on the Mustang thing but I have a #s 65 GTO 389 Tripower 4 in the floor and have had alot more than that offerd to me for it. But it dont matter I aint sellin it.
As too the 68 shes got I'd say you are so close to being right on the money it aint funny. I was thinkin about 7 or so. IMO in todays market for 2nd gens if you sand it down good and just put it in Gray Primer the value will go up just by " First sight" thoughts.

Wakko

I was thinking like a 69-70 GTO...are they worth as much as the 64/65?   I agree about putting the car in primer, it would definitely help the price.

Check out www.hlpag.com to see what we're talking about.

Man, it looks like someone washed that thing in salt water for years. Most Chargers in this condition are fetching around the $5k range. Basically someone will be paying for something to do a total restoration on so the condition of the body isn't all that critical because it's all going to be stripped or dipped anyway. Then it becomes a matter of not if but how many body parts need replacing due to rust. The biggest thing with the starter cars like this is that they are complete, meaning all or most all the original parts are there. If I were going to sell that car I'd list it at $6-$7k and figure on getting $5k.

Over a thousand for front fenders?  That's just stupid.  I'll be glad when Goodmark gets their sheet metal to market.
Oh, and Telvis, the bubble will burst.

Wakko

I really don't think it will.  The price increase might stall, but we have in our minds a set figure that are cars are worth.  We're not suddenly going to lower the prices and if all of us have our cars listed at certain high prices, it makes the value higher because there won't be many available for less than that and they'll have to pay our prices.  It's like price fixing, but not unethical or illegal.

$1000 for fenders? You're talking for both right?

Good fenders can be had for about $500 each maybe $550, tops.
That's about what I paid for mine.
One from Alaska is near perfect - it will clean up nicely.
One from New Jersey needs a bit of work but nothing major. I'll be able to do it with my limited body work skills.
I'll probably have less work to do than I would massagaing a repop panel if they are anything like other repops.. (Although fenders should pretty much bolt on with some shimming - I'm just not that optimistic.)

That total price includes shipping, too.

dodgecharger-fan

Oh, and from what can be seen in those pictures, I'd say that $5000 is in the right price range. Maybe a bit more if it's complete and the frame rails are nice and solid.

My car looked to be in similar shape when I bought it and I paid around that amount - but I found lots of frame rail problems that needed to be fixed.

At that point, I was in the position that others have described here - tear it apart and do a full resto. (I think I was going to do that anyway. :-\ )

The fenders were too far gone to pay someone to fix - so, I bought replacements. I may take a shot at repairing the old ones after I have the car together. Just to have...
