You can always try to get your original rebuilt and converted to either FM or have an MP3 player port added like I did.  Wards Classic Radio repair did mine and I am very happy with it!

I have a hillbilly block off plate(balsa wood). Some day when I get a real job I will get a reproduction one.

Wouldn't a hillbilly block off plate be a cut up Bud can? :P

greenpigs

Nope, the can would have got cashed in during monthly scap run.

I've been over this in my head a lot too. I'm leaning towards just putting a modern head where the stock radio is, but I have to see if that can be done without damaging anything.

I can't recall if you have a console or not in your charger but if you do you could put the radio/amp/whatever in the trunk or under a seat and feed a connection to an iPod type source up in there. Its covered and doesn't stick out of the dash. Its not as easy to reach as a radio in the dash but its not out of reach either for the driver.

Also, isn't there someone out there who stuffs new radio systems into the old Dodge AM radios? So you get the new radio in the old case..

I called them two years ago and to have your stock AM radio converted to AM/FM with MP3 port was $410+tax.

I bought the Secret Audio system for our Charger.  http://www.secretaudio.com/

The radio is located under the center console front plate with the LED hanging under the dash.  The 8 CD changer is located it the trunk above the spare tire.

My plan is to have an iPod in the center console, run that to a compact amplifier under the seat, or behind the rear seat. That amp will power 2 6x9's in the rear package tray, and 2  5 1/4" speakers under the dash. The set up will be pretty much invisible.

i made a block off plate out of plexiglass and painted it. then bought an underdash mount from crutchfield and mounted it right in the center under the dash. not really stock but very cool looking.

Khyron

hmmmmmmmm, good ideas so far.....

I'm digging the secrate audio system though...

and yes i have a center console.

I had an iPod and now have an iPhone that has all of my music.  I did not want the large aftermarket radio hanging down somewhere either as I was unwilling to cut into my dash.  So, what I did was I bought an amp.  I had a 4 channel that I hung under the package tray in the trunk.  I put two 6 x 9 speakers in the place where the rear defrost and factory rear speaker would mount.

I ran an RCA cable from the amp towards the front of the car.  The end that plugs into the iPhone is the headphone type of plug.  I had a bench seat car so I ran the end that plugs into the iPhone so that it came up between the seat backs and laid on the bench seat.  My friend has a console shift car, so he ran his wire into the glove box of the console.

They were good and loud and had our full music libraries available for any ride.  The only thing you saw on my car was the wire on the bench seat to plug in the iPod.

I loved it and will do it to any car I own in the future.

P.S.  Since I did not mess with the factory set up, I still had the AM radio with the 4 x 10 in the front dash.  However, with all the apps available, I do not need the AM radio as the stuff I listen to now streams on my phone.

on my second gen (68) i found a used (cracked) center piece of dash fascia - I then dremeled out the offending parts and mounded my radio in it...    a standard CD will fit in the cutout on the dash frame does not need to be modified at all - so you only need to hack the fascia piece.

Im sure he wants to keep it looking stock. I feel that an aftermarket radio just looks out of place in the interior of these cars.

to each his own -  I personally think a 6.1 Hemi looks out of place in a classic engine bay...     but it still gets the job done better than the original   :smilielol:

bingo, it's not stealing or anything, I just don't want a modern radio with all the lights and bells and such right in the middle of my dash.

yes, gauges and such are fine... but also the car being a DMCL clone. I don't want a BOSE ruining the look
