How much is a suregrip worth?

I am starting the work on my 73 SE, and I have 6 parts cars. One of the parts cars that I just got has a suregrip rear end, and I'm not sure if I want to put it in my car, or sell it. I was a bit curious what they are worth....approx anyway. I will have many parts to sell as I get deeper into this project and decide for sure what I am using compared to what I am selling! I wonder if the suregrip has a larger brake drum than the 8 1/4

The value depends on the type of rear end and the type of the Sure-Grip unit. 8 3/4" is generally worth more than a 8 1/4" and a clutch type Sure-Grip is worth more than a cone type.

How do you tell the difference in them

 Open them up and take pictures. Also, be advised that alot of old sure-grips might act like they work, but when you put then into a car with a full load on them....They won't work and are shot. Been there, done that.

One thing about those units, ya' just never know.  I bought a 3:91 Clutch type SG for $200, installed it and it was trash!!! I had it rebuilt for $719 a few weeks ago.

But to answer your question I'd say min of $50 and max $200...I just sold one for $75, a cone type 3:23 SG.

I would not sell an 8 3/4 posi under 300. I have never sold one under that. I have had several of them. Just make sure its good. You dont want to rip anyone off.

I got a 3.91 SG (with entire housing...it was missing some brake parts though) for $500. It was another $250 to have new clutches put in.  I did a thread on it, the guy who did the rebuild told me I did good $ wise as the setup was straight and in very good condition.

I'm with "69charger440"...No way I'd sell a Sure Grip Clutch Chunk For under $500.00... a $200.00 Chunk with $700.00 spent on it...I'd say You now own a $900.00 Chunk...If you couldn't get anymore than $200.00 for a Sure Grip Chunk, I'd just keep it till the low ballers and this economy are over...You check the price of trying to assemble a Brand new Sure Grip and see how bad $500.00 sounds...It's what like $2000.00 For a brand new Sure Grip Chunk with gear of choice?...

You can get the clutch rebuild kit for the clutch type for about $75 or so.  Theoretically, the cone type are not rebuildable.  I have seen threads where folks have machined the cones and, in essence, rebuilt them.  Not sure where you would get this done.  The clutch type sure grip will fit in either the 741, 742, or 489 chunk.  Have to use the bearings for that specific chunk.  It's hard to find clutch type sure gripsin junkyards.  But they are still out there incredibly enough.  You can find them in trucks on occasion.
