How can I make sure what my 440 is out of? went to start buying some parts for it, and couldn't answer what the guy was asking.
6.6 liter? 7.2 liter?
VIN "U"?     VIN "T"?
and I'm not exactly sure what year it is...
I just need to figure out what species it is!!! :icon_smile_tongue: lol

If I remember right, it had a build date of 1-18-72... but I'm not 100%, I'll double check that.

6.6 I believe is a 400 and the 7.2 is the 440

Is there a way to check the VIN numbers on it? to see what it came out of?
And is there different size 440's? I mean in liters? like for a truck, rather than a car?

There is a flat pad on the side of the skirt the oil pan bolts to, drivers side, it will have the VIN # stamped on it. The flat on top of the block, driver side, next to the front of the valley pan, will have motor specific info on it or markings to decode. Good Luck!  :2thumbs:

no, 440 is allways a 440, same as 7.2 is a 7.2

there is a diff on some of their parts ( cam, heads, intake, exhaust ) but not on displacement

Just keep in mind the reason a allot of motors were 426, 427, 429, excreta was the old racing rule of under 7 liters back in the day.

FWIW....if the guy working behind the counter knew what he was doing besides reading a computer screen, he would know by general knowledge of the litres/cubes.....but...yes.....7.2 is 440...and they are all geometrically the same.

There is a number cast right into the side of the block, just beneath the heads and above the freeze plugs... it will most likely read 2536430 or 3698830 in your case.  You can look it up here: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=66

There's also going to be some information stamped into the boss at the top front of the block... something like H 440... etc
You can look up information for this here:  http://www.yearone.com/updatedsinglepages/Id_info/mopar/mopar%20casting%20numbers/castingnumbers3.html

2536430... yup
And it also says:

   H 440
