HEY ALL I AM GETTING READY TO START THE BODY WORK ON MY CHARGER, AND AM AT A DILEMA ON STRIPPING PAINT! I WOULD LIKE TO USE THE LIQUID PAINT STRIPPER, BUT DON'T WANT TO MESS UP THE FILLER THAT IS ALREADY IN THE CAR, DUE TO BEING ON A TIGHT BUDGET! HOW OR WHAT WILL BE THE EASIEST WAY TO STRIP THE PAINT WITH THIS LIQUID STRIPPER, WITHOUT DAMAGING THE INTEGRITY OF THE BODY FILLER THATS IN THE CAR? ANY SUGGESTIONS, TIPS, AND MATERIAL REFERENCE APPRECIATED! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

So your going to go through all the trouble of stripping the paint without bothering to redo the filler? not a wise choice if you ask me. I'd grind the filler out and apply new filler after seeing if I can repair the damage under it anybetter than it was before.

THAT IS WHAT EVERYONE IS TELLING ME! SO THAT IS WHY I ASKED YOU ALL HERE!  I AM JUST AFRAID OF WHAT I MIGHT BE GETTING INTO FILLER WISE! ALSO I HAVE NOT A VERY BIG BUDGET, AND AFRAID IT MIGHT TAKE MORE THAN I HAVE! I DON'T WANT IT TO KEEP ROTTING THOUGH EITHER! I APPRECIATE YOUR REPLY AND WILL PROBABLY TAKE THE OLD FILLER OUT!!!

terrible one

If you do plan to take the filler out, use "Aircraft Stripper" or an eqivalent. What I'm talking about is made b Klean Strip and can be had at the local NAPA or whatever. That's a really nice fast way, but it does bring along flashrust if you don't put on a rust preventer or primer quickly afterwards.

Well if you aren't going to see what is underneath the filler, rust, etc. , I wouldn't strip it unless the paint is in poor condition.  Just use that as your base.

If you are doing the whole car at once and your budget permits it, I would find a plastic media guy to blast it. My Charger was totally stripped off trim pieces and the blaster charged me $ 800 to do all of it including inside engine compartment, hood and trunk. It was blasted to white metal. I ran to body shop with it immediately and the body guy then removed the body filler and pulled out/cut and rewelded all the dents. He said it saved his allot of time (more than $ 800) which in turn, it saved me some money. I would be leery about using chemicals. What happens if you don't get to remove/wipe all the paint removal chemicals to a molecular level? By the way $ 800 is NY metropolitan numbers! I dont know were you at.

Agree with Adam

If your on a budget just sand, spot fix, prime and paint. The save $$ dto do it right later. Doing it 1/2 way right now is a waste of your time and money

sharpspike

are you doing the body work and paint yourself or taking to a body shop. if your doing it yourself i dont think a couple gallons of filler would be a budget buster.
if your having it done ask them what they prefer, i wouldn't want to rely on old body work under a paint job i was doing. if it fails who's at fault the new or the old. :Twocents: :popcrn:

WELL, RIGHT NOW, I AM UNEMPLOYED DUE TO LIMITATIONS DUE TO A DISABILITY! WITH THIS I WILL PROBABLY BE USING THE VA'S VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM AND GO TO COLLEGE FOR 4 YEARS AND RECIEVE A BACHELORS DEGREE! ONCE OUT OF SCHOOL "GOD WILLING", I WILL FIND SUITABLE EMPLOYMENT THAT WILL COMPENSATE MY NEEDS AND PAY BETTER DUE TO BEING IN A BETTER PROFESSION! NOW THE CHARGER IS SETTING THERE ROTTING AWAY RIGHT NOW! I FIGURE IF I WAS TO CUT OUT THE RUST AND PUT IN NEW METAL IN AREAS NEEDED, AND USE THE EXISTING PAINT THAT IS THERE  FOR THE PRIMER, SAND IT DOWN A LITTLE AND RE-SHOOT THE NEW METAL AREAS, SINCE I AM ON AN EXTREME LOW DOLLAR BUDGET, AND SHOOT IT WITH PAINT, IT WILL AT LEAST KEEP THIS CAR FROM TOTALLY ROTTING AWAY, AND BESIDES CAN USE IT AS A DRIVER TO GET BY WITH AS WELL!!! THAT WAS MY THOUGHT PROCESS ON THIS MATTER!!

i can relate to that bud,my charger  is siiting in the garage , and im not financially able to work on it  at all......plus, im trying to get a mortgage on the house  im renting , so im leary of tearing into the car just yet.......

but i still think that even if you are going to use the car as a driver, you should strip all of the old filler out, cuz  you never know , somebody couldve filled  rust holes with bondo or even worse.

i just hate to see you spend good money , on hurry up repairs

and one other thing ,then ill shut up......... if you are wanting to make the car look decent so yo can drive it, i know that nobody here will think less  of yo for driving a rattle can special...remember , you are driving a work in progress...but at least  you are driving it

mally69

whatever you do DONT cut corners that will come back at you later on
i myself have used aircraft stripper and talstrip both of these products took the paint off but ALSO TOOK OFF THE FILLER

AKcharger

Hmmmm so the stripper pulled of the bondo too huh? I'll have to try that next time1

elitecustombody

no, the stripper will make the filler blister and only soften up the outer surface,it won't take it off if it's thicker than 3/16"  :Twocents:

OP, why even bother if it won't be done right , cover up all rusted areas from both sides with Rust Bullet  or POR and do it right when you get enough funds

Yes, it will ruin the filler if it doesn't come off completely.

The thread is from 2006 and I think AK dug it up just to comment on the filler. The OP hasn't been around since 2007.
