Over the past few years I have come across some who say the second generation Charger is the Coke bottle one and other articles that claim the third gen is Coke shaped. Or are both?  I kinda see it in my 71 but second gens seem too straight.  And are you supposed to look from the side or top down? Anyone know the real story? Kim

Can you or your company help manufacture/market my great invention? Go to www.safefridge.com to see it and make sure to check out the ad. If you think it has potential and can help, write me at safefridge@gmail.com and perhaps we can make a deal.

Hi Kim, I've always thought the new for 68 Charger was based on the Coca-Cola bottle and the Third Generation just made it more apparent. Here is a quote about Richard Sias and his GTO inspired design.....What designer Richard Sias came up with was a double-diamond design that would later be referred to as coke bottle styling. From the side profile the curves around the front fenders and rear quarter panels look almost like a Coke bottle. Front and rear end sheet metal was designed by Harvey J Winn. The rear end featured a "kick up" spoiler appearance, inspired by Group 7 racing vehicles. On the roof a "flying buttress" was added to give the rear window area a look similar to that of the 1966-67 Pontiac GTO
Hope this helps...... :2thumbs:

Cheers,

Steve

Okay, take a coke bottle, I sugject a old glass one. take a good look at it. Then tilt your head over and look at a 2nd gen charger. Now pay no attention to the roof of the car but rather just the rear quarter skin line and run you eye up the side following the body line. As your eye goes up and down over the rear skin that would be like the first part of the coke bottle (buttom part) and as your eye runs across the center part of the charger over the door area you will see to body lines here kinda over laping (this would be the center top part of the coke bottle. Now as your eye runs up the door top panel line and starts out into the front fender of the charger you are now at the top part of the coke bottle almost, as your passest the hump in the fender this would be the hump part of the coke bottle top part. and as your eye comes to the front of the front fender edge you eye are now really and kinda at the top part of the coke bottle.  :icon_smile_wink:

You see, when you really really look at the coke bottle and then look at the 2nd gen charger, you can really see the coke bottle design in it alot

Troy

Look at a 2nd gen from above - it's real easy to see the coke bottle shape. The reference came about with the 68 models.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Look at the angle of my red car in my signature looks just like a coke bottle .

On fighter aircraft they sometimes use a wasp waist or coke bottle shape fuselage. the waist is where the wing protrudes. This helps streamline the over all cross section of the aircraft. As the wings start to add to the cross section , the smaller fuselage waist  helps keep it total cross section from having a big bulge. Lowers drag.

The coke waist on a 2nd or 3rd gen. Charger is where the cabin starts to protrude into the airstream.

Windtunnel or styling? ...... Don't know, however ir's a win/win for us.

Mr.Woolery

Both the 2nd and 3rd gen Chargers are "Coke bottle" designs, with the 3rd gen bodies also being called "Fuselage" designs.  They took the Coke bottle design from the 2nd gen and made it more pronounced in the 3rd gen.

Kim you'r a Troll,.. you know that right?..

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,15865.0.html

my point is showing these GTO profiles is that the Charger and Dodge in general was chasing Pontiac in the market
disagree if you like with my feeling that Dodge's designs for both manufacturing and style reasons aped the GM design
started by Bill Michell of the wasp waists begun on the Mako Shark show cars in the early to mid '60s..
The third Gens had in common with the '68 G.M. intermediates the lack of a defined rear fender line seperating the roof from the rear fender also, the rear window designs were basicly carbon copies the same can be seen in the Torino designs especially the fastbacks of both the '68/69 and the 70/71 then again on the 72 up which even more closely followed industry practice,.. I suspect ease of manufacture as well as design trends, wasn't the third gen significantly  wider?.. interior space across the rear could be maximized by widening the roof to the outside edges of the rear fender.
Just my thoughts and 2 cents. pardon my pontifications but I do love these Designs...

I got my information from this article.  http://musclecars.howstuffworks.com/classic-muscle-cars/1971-dodge-charger-hemi.htm  But Brock is correct on one thing for sure.  When I bought my car from the original owner I asked why he had chrome side mirrors and he said to distinguish the car from the GTO.  Kim
